[1 vs 1] Round 1, Hong Meiling vs. Shou Toramaru

Postby Hong Meiling » 18 Mar 2010 17:03

Her toes wriggled together in her silk shoes; the soles scratching as she shifted her position along the grainy, sandy pit where the matches were to take place. Mindlessly, Meiling dug the heel of her foot into the sand, feeling the depth with an added bit of relief; anyone thrown down in the ring would not be hurt too badly. There was more an enough sand for a cushioned fall.

So far, she stood alone in the ring, and her mind wandered with no concrete target to focus on. She looked over the stands, and over the horizon, and into the warm, shining sun above. It was a nice day; alongside the sun, many of the spectators face shone with anticipation-- Meiling among them.

Not only had the Guard come with the intent to clear her name of shame, she had come with the desire to test her skills. It seemed to go hand in hand that a martial-arts youkai would be present to a martial-arts tournament. It was inevitable, and the prospect of a good match caused tiny, visible goose bumps to coat Meiling’s arms and legs.

She was excited.

Shou Toramaru entered the arena. Ever since scribing her name down on the entry sheet, she had trained, meditated and prepared for the day when she could demonstrate what the Disciple of Bishamonten could accomplish. She was in no doubt that victory would be difficult, and defeat a real possibility, but, she knew that for every victory, for every defeat, her abilities would continue to improve and sharpen. After all, Bishamonten had assured her as such during her training.

Shou had seen the green-clothed gate guard when she originally signed up for the tournament, now that it was just the two of them standing in the arena, she could tell that she would be quite the opponent to fight against. She decided to address the gate guard directly, “I am Shou Toramaru of the Myouren Temple, a representative of Bishamonten and a devotee of the creed of Byakuren Hijiri. Bishamonten wishes for a good battle.” Shou spun her spear, and assumed a combat stance, ready to stride forward at a moment’s notice.

“I hope you will oblige.”

That was a critical error so early in the battle, only a few seconds had passed yet this Hong Meiling had forced her on the defence. As soon as the guard rushed forward, Shou had responded to in kind, preparing her own attack as she ran forwards. Meiling’s attack was simply far faster than she expected, and she had to quickly switch to a defensive posture and lost momentum.

Rather than lose that momentum, though, she still had her preparing attack, a barrage of her gracefully curving projectiles, she hoped that would confuse the gate guard and allow her to get into a better position to use her spellcards against this difficult opponent.

Meiling would be the one to initiate spell cards, though at the cost of far more than she would have liked to give. She had anticipated a weapon attack-- after all, Shou had been equipped with a spear. By moving in close, Meiling was hoping to reduce Shou’s movements, giving Meiling the upper edge in combat.

She had no anticipated the use of danmaku, and that flaw put her directly in point-blank range. The balls of energy collided with the guard, sizzling in tiny explosions against Meiling’s skin and clothing. Even so, Meiling had not gone in entirely unprepared-- at the risk to her persons, she was able to close in enough ground to make contact.

As soon as she was in range, Meiling raised her leg, arching it forwards towards Shou in an attempt to knock the tiger off of her feet.

Her danmaku barrage had worked, but the gate guard's stubborn perseverance was not something Shou could predict so well. As the gate guard executed her powerful kick attack, Shou raised her spear as a defence against the attack, while it looked like an everyday melee weapon, this was the Spear of Bishamonten, and would not break so easily in combat, however, the impact of Meiling's kick on Shou's guard launched the tiger youkai into the air.

Seeing that the gate guard could sieze the combat advantage, Shou weaved the simple spells that allowed her to fly, flipped over to face Meiling once again, and prepared her own spellcard attack. She held her Jeweled Pagoda aloft, and allowed its light to dissolve into a thick curtain of projectiles.

Meiling inhaled, filling her lungs in with air the moment that she saw Shou turn mid-air. She had to be prepared-- This woman was a heavy hitter, and this type of a match would be over quickly. Shou’s attacks were strait forward, but powerful; she was indeed like a tiger, rushing with full strength and blowing her enemies away.

Which meant that Meiling would need to be graceful and quick, with a deep understanding of the duo’s movement. If Shou were to push, Meiling would just need to pull in order to hold her own against such a powerful foe.

It was easier said than done-- Meiling would quickly be swept away if she didn’t somehow evade the wide range of projectiles quickly hurling towards her. Her mind went into over drive and the Chinese Youkai bit at her cheek; even if it wasn’t exactly the smartest way, the only way that Meiling knew how to counter would have to work.

It took almost a split second, her mind focused and she skimmed what energy she could without any time to gather. Her move was a last-ditch, sudden attempt, but she hoped that she could put in just enough energy to be effective.

Her hands came together, as if holding a small ball.

Oh, she hoped it would work.

She pulled back, and a flickering, iridescent light formed between her fingers.

Please, let it work.

Extreme Color "Colorful Light Chaotic Dance"
Meiling uses her opponent's energy against them, avoiding damage.
Damage: 2d10
Effect: Meiling recovers END equal to the damage roll.

Her arms shot forward, and the rainbow ball shot forth towards Shou, knocking away any danmaku in its path as it centered in on the tiger-like woman.

But while the attack had knocked away many of the projectiles aimed at Meiling, it could not block them all. Even as a last ditch attempt, she had made some effort to be flighty, ducking and dodging as quick as possible, and taking full advantage of the clearing that her attack had made. But even that could not stop Meiling from being barraged by many of the projectiles here and there. While individually, they were not much more than bruises and burns, when considering the sheer mass of them, Meiling had taken her fair share of damage.

Shou’s Endurance: 54
Buffs: None
Debuffs: None

Shou hadn’t expected that, although her attacks had gotten through the gate guard’s defences, the counterattack was sudden and gave no opportunity for defence or manoeuvre. Shou still had plenty of fight left in her, though, using the force generated by Meiling’s rainbow-coloured assault, Shou increased the distance between her and the guard and prepared her next attack. Shou’s opponent was giving her no quarter, she would respond in kind.

Light Sign "Aura of Justice"
Shou fires a series of lasers across the battlefield, using smaller bullets to cover the gaps between them.
Damage: 4d10
Effect: None

There was less grace in this attack, this was more a demonstration of the power of the Jeweled Pagoda’s sacred light. Gone were her elegant curving projectiles, instead replaced with straight beams of light, with shots dancing between them. Even if she lost this combat, if the gate guard could survive her onslaught like this, then she was truly a worthy opponent.

Meiling's Endurance: 54

Meiling clicked her tongue when she saw Shou gain more distance-- The tiger was using her own tricks against her. But just as Meiling was trying to give Shou no room to move, Shou was trying to give Meiling no way to close in. It was a difficult situation. Both fighters were well skilled in their elements…

But if Meiling couldn’t close in, there wasn’t much that she could do when the lasers would come.

And there they were-- As if on cue with Meiling’s thoughts, Shou let forth her attack. The lasers shot on either side of the guard-- trapping her in. She would need to think of some way to close in…!

But Shou wouldn’t let Meiling simply rush forward, no. The smaller, more moveable projectiles shot forth, and Meiling was forced to bear the brunt of the attacks. The small danmaku bit at her skin and clothing, hissing as they burnt against Meiling. Still, she clenched her jaw and pushed herself as far as she could-- getting near close enough to reach---

Meiling knew it was a gamble, but even one hit was better than nothing in her situation. The guard gave a shout, throwing her palm out to land a soft attack that would barely graze against Shou, yet inject Meiling’s very fighting essence into the woman.

Darting back, Meiling took a series of jumps to try to distance herself from the attacks, panting as she gripped at a particularly nasty burnt on her arm.

This needed to be over, and it needed to be over quick.

Shou’s Endurance: 44
Buffs: None
Debuffs: None

Shou watched Meiling fight her way through the almost impenetrable grid of projectiles she had cast forward. Even though the gate guard was closing in for another attack, Shou had nothing but admiration for this youkai, Shou could see the fighting spirit admired by Bishamonten himself burning in her eyes. Despite all that, Meiling’s attack seemed to hardly hurt at all, for the gate guard to miss an attack like that was almost inconceivable.

As Shou turned to face Meiling once again, she could feel her power beginning to fluctuate in a way she couldn’t control, it slowly dawned however what Meiling was trying to accomplish. There was only one way she could prevent Meiling’s gambit from being successful, she would have to pour as much power as possible into a single spell card before the fluctuations escalated. She pulled out her Holy Vajra, and diverted as much of her power into it at possible, sending it’s two sections spinning across the battlefield, hopefully catching Meiling off guard.

Buddha's Light "Vajra of Perfect Buddhism"
Shou fires a massive cross based on the Holy Vajra. Shou can choose to split the cross in two.
Damage: 4d10 or 3d20
Effect: Shou can choose to take 10 backlash damage. If this is done, this card does 3d20 damage instead of 4d10.

Shou takes 10 backlash damage.

Meiling's Endurance: 3

“Gckkkt!!” Meiling was incomprehensible as she felt the attack collide with her head on-- never in this match had Meiling expected to be hit with such a huge amount of power, even taking into consideration how closely this woman seemed to follow the tiger branch of fighting. The guard choked on her own spittle, coughing as she clutched at the sand pit below her.

Her vision was already going fuzzy-- to be hit by such a powerful attack in one shot-- it was nearly too much. Under normal circumstances, Meiling would have likely collapsed then and there. But… She had to fight this, and she had to win this. This was the only way to prove herself to Lady Patchouli and earn back her pride as the Scarlet Devil Mansion’s guard.

Her fingers dug through the sand, clutching at it as her hands balled into tight fists. When the youkai finally turned her attention back on the opponent before her, her glare had hardened, and Meiling clearly held a determination that she had been lacking moments prior.

Last Word "Chinese Murder"
Punishment will be swift and painful.
Damage: 6d10
Effect: Cannot be used unless Meiling's Endurance is 50 or below.

She shot forth from nothing, pushing her muscles to the limit as she closed in on Shou a final time-- her hat falling uselessly in the sand from Meiling’s sudden acceleration. Her motions were far quicker before, acting on a burning desire to win. Even as Meiling released a burst of sudden punches, her moves were lackluster. She moved through the motions of her final attack-- yet even then, she lacked much of the power that it normally held.

Clearly, the guard was running out of steam, and fast.

Meiling moved at the limit of Shou’s perception, there was no chance of dodging or deflecting the attack, simply wait for it to be over. Despite the disruption of her abilities by Meiling’s earlier attack, she had gathered enough power together inside her Sacred Pagoda, where it couldn’t be touched by the gate guard’s chi flow, and with it, she was able to withstand the furious onslaught of the gate guard’s final glorious effort, and keep enough back to end this battle in her favour.

She turned to face Meiling, her most worthy opponent, “You have done well, Guard of the Scarlet Mansion, and they are blessed to have such a powerful warrior guarding their gates.” Shou cast her hand holding the Pagoda into the air, willing all of her power together into one final spell, causing orbs of light to appear all around her.

“You shall bear witness to the true light of the light of Dharma, and bow down before this Pagoda of Vaisravana.”

"Complete Clarification" - Last Word
Shou combines her straight and curvy lasers into a complex web that is almost impossible to escape from.
Damage: 3d20
Effect: Can only be used at 50 END or lower.

Shou tapped her spear on the ground twice, signalling the start of her final attack. Light poured forth from the Jeweled Pagoda, blasting across the battlefield surrounded by numerous smaller curving bullets so typical of the tiger youkai's attacks.

Meiling still stood, even if she was visibly drooping; the guard had used most--if not all-- of her power in her last stand. She could feel the dejection welling up in her chest, even before Shou began to speak. She had nothing left to give-- nothing left to put on the table. Clearly, she had been out powered entirely by this strange, disciplined woman.

She knew she had lost-- and out of respect, or perhaps sheer exhaustion, Meiling made no attempt to dodge Shou’s final attack. The light spread, engulfing Meiling entirely before it dispersed. The burst, and subsequent wave, were more than enough to knock Meiling off of her feet, sending the guard falling back on the brink of consciousness.

There was a slight crunch as she fell against the sand, but the fall itself was not painful. She lay there for a moment, staring up at the sky and sun above, simply dazed. As overwhelmed as she was, Meiling took a moment to just look, understanding her loss and her own lack of power. From the ground, a small laugh escaped her, before she pulled herself up to her elbows, smiling at Shou with a look of respect, and mayhaps a twinge of friendship.

“Good match.” The smile remained, even as Meiling pulled herself up, all the while moaning and groaning to herself quietly about her aches and pains, “I had fun.”

There was no malice or mean-spirit in her words, or her intentions. Meiling was carefully and purposefully expressing herself, even as she rubbed at her stomach with a slight wince.

“You better win.” The look on Meiling’s face made it clear that she would be rooting for the tiger. “I won’t accept anything less from the person who beat me.”

Her smile sharpened, and it was clear that Meiling had a good deal of faith in her opponent.

Shou walked calmly towards her defeated opponent, and just like Meiling, there was no contempt or malice in her actions, she was instead smiling. It wasn’t the taste of victory that she was enjoying; it was that she had found an equal in combat, someone who had enjoyed their projectile-filled dance around the arena and was still in good enough spirits to acknowledge that fact.

“Indeed, Miss Meiling, that was an entertaining fight. If you are able to spare time in the future, perhaps you would like to visit the Myouren Temple near the human village. If you wish to spar with me again in future, you can usually find me there.”

Shou gave a deep bow to her opponent, turned, and began to walk out of the arena, Meiling’s supportive words echoing as she awaited the second round.
