[PoST - Round 1] Rin Kaenbyou vs. Suika Ibuki

Postby Rin Kaenbyou » 19 Dec 2012 21:09

When the kasha had cast in her lot for the tournament, she had no idea she’d be facing down the two-horned terror she had only just met. ‘Aww of all the youkai above an’ under the earth, I have to fight an oni. Not just any oni, one of the damn Four Heavenly Kings... or are they Deva... what did Satori-sam’nya call ‘em again? I’ll hafta ask her... after the tournament is all gone and done with that is. Maybe I really shoulda asked her first.’ Orin grimaced, flinching at the thought of whether she’d have a worse time with facing the oni or facing her master. She’d rather face ten oni than have Satori upset at her, but what’s done is done. She tried to clear the worries from her mind with a nervous laugh, but wasn't entirely successful.

There were very few places in Old Hell that could be considered beautiful, but this was one of them. At least to the Hellcat. Perhaps not for those accustomed to idyllic days spent frolicking amongst meadows of flowers (though those were pretty too) but the Hellfire Mantle had an austere beauty seen nowhere else in Gensokyo. The deeper recesses of the Blazing Hells rested on a vast sea of magma and hard mafic rock crushed together to form islands and continents in the very forge of creation. Large pools of liquid rock churned tumultuously in lakes of fire that passed into molten rivers with shores of obsidian glass, the rivers feeding smalller tributaries. Ash fell in flurries of blackened snow, and the air was choked with the heavy scent of sulfur and brimstone. It was if the subterranean Hell itself bore and grudge against the living, attempting to crush both body and spirit.

Orin had chosen to face Suika there, in a broad tunnel-like formation that extended deeper into the mantle and the further hells like a hellish highway in both directions. The chasm had been enclosed as part of the subterranean tunnel, but some long forgotten cataclysm had sheared much of the roof from the tunnel, revealing the passage. Deep reddish light from lakes of fire filtered through the fragmented walls of the tunnel and cast a bloodish hue over the stone, mixing with the ephemeral azure lights of lost souls. Sporadic circular bands of basalt and volcanic rock formed vast, rings that ran the length of the lava tube, resembling the ribcage of some serpentine leviathan. The ground was littered with a numberless legion of charred and blackened skeletons from the furnaces, the forgotten remains of ancient sinners as countless as grains of sand on a beach.

An appropriately hellish shore for the vast broken seas of fire. Most of the bones were shattered and broken, though there were still plenty that where left from more recent residents. It was not hard to follow the the flow of remains to their source, the furnaces at the heart of the Blazing Fires. One could even make out the imposing structures of the furnaces through through the collapsed ceiling. Smaller breaches led out to edge of the magma ocean and others led to a honeycomb of branching capillaries, most too small for the average humanoid to travel. Not that anyone in her right mind would try to navigate them, many of the lines were still hot with flows of molten rock pulsing through them as if driven by an infernal heartbeat. Even she didn’t dare to travel some of the more erratic passages.

The Kasha sat on the edge of her cart, balanced perfectly against it. One of her familiars nuzzled its way up under her arm. The flame-clad skull chattered harshly as she stroked it across the head. She had chosen Hell’s Highway as her battleground, and she’d show the oni why she was known as “Hell’s Traffic Accident.”

The thought of the winner's prize had hardly entered Suika's mind when she'd signed up for the tournament. To her, it had just been a chance to have some fun challenging herself with a series of good fights. The little oni would have been happy no matter who she'd been matched with, but a duel with a recent acquaintance was cause for celebration. Even so, she wouldn't go easy on Rin--if she lost in the first round, she'd only get this one fight!

She gulped down a swig of sake from her gourd as she stepped into the red glow, and greeted her opponent with a glassy-eyed stare and drunken slurring. "Nice playsh y'picked fer th'fight~. Let'sh 'ave a good, fun one!" Beneath her harmless facade, the oni was quickly taking note of the battlefield's features, and how she might use or defend against them. Her attention shifted quickly--with barely-noticeable movements of her eyes--from one hazard to the next, noting the locations of each of the side tunnels, as well as the magma shore. And those bones. With a necromancer for an opponent, there was no way she could ignore that enormous pile of skeletons.

The oni approached a few steps toward the kasha before shifting her feet, taking up what looked a drunkard's mockery of a fighting stance, swaying slowly back and forth, her hands hovering unsteadily in front of her. Suika grinned, a dazed and cheery-looking parody of the menacing smile of an oni faced with a proper challenge--though the red-orange glow the lava and hellfire cast on her features worked against her attempt to appear unthreatening. "Y'ready t'go?"

Doubtless the hellcat would know Suika was more dangerous than she was trying to seem, but the drunk Deva had found, in her millenia of experience, that it often paid not to let on exactly how much was or wasn't an act. It was true oni didn't lie, but that didn't mean some of them couldn't still use tricky tactics in a fight!

The little oni reeked... Orin was beginning to wonder if Suika was more alcohol by content than she was oni. The kasha was also really beginning to wonder if sake was truly the source of the oni’s prodigious strength. If so, then he was in for a spot of trouble, as from all appearances, Suika was completely flushed. No doubt the deva had strength in spades, but Rin still had some cards up her sleeve. She would make Satori proud of her... even if Satori had no idea she was participating in the tournament. ‘All the better to surprise her with, when I win.’

The hellcat was a born predator and even at a glance she could tell the little oni was cataloguing the various hazards of the field. There was little chance the she'd would be able to completely surprise the oni, so she’d just have to distract Suika and ambush her when her attention was elsewhere. There was a flare of annoyance and both of her tails trashed from side to side in twin blazed of fire. The deva didn’t seem to be taking things seriously. The ruby red eyes smoldered like two hot coals as she tried to figure out just how much of the her actions were a bluff. It was obvious that the tiny two-horned terror was far more dangerous than she was letting on. All the much better, she would try not to tip her hand too soon either.

With a backwards tilt of her large coal black ears, her lips curled in a feral smile.

“Oh I’m sure we’ll have our larks, sis. Let’s not wait a moment longer~”

In the dim hellish light of the tunnel the smile on the kasha’s face had turned to predatory leer and she wound her right hand back over her shoulder, her left hand behind her. As she did so two small beads of fire sparked to life above the palm of her right hand. The two gouts of flame began to revolve about each other, spiraling outwards in a quickening orbit until they blossomed into a circular ring of dense flames. With a graceful sweep of her arm, she unleashed the wheel forward in an underhanded pitch, the wheel of red flame traveling nearly vertically, listing to the kasha’s left. She let the momentum of the throw carry her into a tight twirl that caused the folds of her skirt to flare. The motion was hardly a decorative flourish as she used the momentum from the spin to cast a second, smaller corona of fire with a sidearm motion, this one traveling roughly parallel to the field of rock and bone.

The fiery wheels shed gouts of red flame as they traveled in shallow arcs that would intersect a step or two ahead of where Suika was standing. The first great wheel of flame burst into fiery bullets that began to slow as they scattered in an expanding spiral pattern, counterclockwise. The bullets at the outer edge slowed the most noticeably, while those in the center lost little of their speed. The second wheel burst an instant later, exploding into a secondary tempest of fiery bullets that followed the similar pattern as those from the first ring. The smaller flames from the second burst skirted under the first other volley in a similar counterclockwise rotation, but traveling at a much greater velocity.

“How ‘bout this for a warm welcome.”

Re: [PoST - Round 1] Rin Kaenbyou vs. Suika Ibuki

So the kitten was going to start off with a bit of simple danmaku like that? It wouldn't be enough to get the little drunkard to tip her hand, if that was what Orin was thinking. In fact... it looked like just enough of a challenge to have some fun making her way through it! "Whazzat? Aaahh, pretty lightsh, sis! Looksh fun!"

Suika lurched to a stop before stumbling to the side, taking herself, seemingly by coincidence, out of the paths of the two spirals of flame--not to mention the way her head tilted down just in time to avoid a flame-bullet to the face. When the oni righted herself with a sudden, wobbly jerk upright, it happened to be at the perfect moment for another projectile to graze between her horns. She kept on just like that, lurching, bobbing, ducking, and, one time, falling flat on her back, out of the way of each and every one of Orin's flames that came her way... even if a couple of them did singe the frills of her dress. There were even a few that really weren't on purpose, like that one that passed under the arc of her back when she lifted herself back to her feet from the fall-dodge.

The walking party's intoxicated antics and any amusement they might provide herself or others aside, she was unmistakably making her way toward her opponent. Even if it wasn't a very difficult pattern, no one would have made it past the center of that danmaku by pure luck--and now Suika was far enough out that she barely had to dodge anymore, yet it was near-impossible to tell which or how many dodges had been intentional. "Heya sis, throwin shtuff at each other'sh fun an' all..." Here, Suika paused, gathering small flecks of matter above the palm of her hand, packing bits of bone, dust, and air together until they formed a small, pure black sphere, like a hole in reality, from which no light escaped--blacker than anything else the kasha, or anyone, could have ever seen. It seemed almost to radiate darkness, and around its edges the view of the space behind was distorted. "...But fightin'sh even better up close!"

It was hard to see her exact movements through the bent light surrounding the tiny black hole in her hand, but a moment later the black sphere was on its way toward the hellcat, thrown with a fast overhand pitch. To be precise, it was aimed at a spot a few inches to Orin's left. Meanwhile, the little oni had broken into a run, arms flailing at her sides for balance, her head flopping backward slightly, almost as if being dragged along behind her body. Suika's path angled just a few degrees off from a collision course for Orin, aiming to end up just to her opponent's right.

If the cat didn't move, the black hole might miss, but she'd wind up within reach of an oni. The projectile made a jump to the left risky, and a step to the right would bring Orin face to face with one of the Four Devas. For anything else the necromancer might try... well, Suika had always been good at improvisation.

If there was something the kasha was familiar with, it was darkness, It wasn’t as though one had to travel to the far reaches of the Blazing Hells to find a little darkness. The kasha could tell there was something different. Something that was more than just a little unnerving about the cluster of darkness heading her way. It just felt wrong as she watched the small cluster of annihilation drawing in ash, bone and dust and obliterating all that fell under its touch. It was beautiful. Orin blinked as she watched it, forgetting for a split instance that it was headed right for her. And so was the oni.

The Drunken Pandemonium hurtling towards her caused a small stab of panic, betrayed only be a brief flick of her ears and curl of her tails. She definitely didn’t want to go round-to-round with the two-horned terror, but Suika seemed determined to join the battle in melee. She knew the shadowy sphere was a feint, to drive her towards the oni’s clutches, but it would be foolish to consider those the only two choices she had. She go between the horns... well, metaphorically.

“I hadn’ the faintest notion that oni were such lovely dancers. Shall we sis?”

She’d need a little more speed to burst past the oni than she could get from a standing start. With a fluid grace particular to felines, she somersaulted backwards over a pile of bones, collecting a skull in her right hand as she did. The yellowed bone hissed at her first touch, the skull blossoming into an azure bloom of flame. The kasha threw her right arm behind her, flinging the the cursed spirit away and behind her as she landed from the backflip in a crouching position. All of the muscles in her legs tensed and coiled like springs ready to release in one explosive burst of speed. The new accursed spirit entered into a banking turn, slingshotting out of a of a parabolic arch that accelerated the burning skull on a direct collision course with the oni’s chest. It roared right over the tips of Orin’s coal black ears.

“You’ll forgive me if I don’ quite follow your lead.”

As the accursed spirit soared over her, the azure fires flared into large billowing sheets of flame that trailed the skull like the tail of a comet. Rin sprung forward at a blistering pace, shifting mid-leap into her feline form under the cover of the the flame. She overtook the skull and darted towards the small oni in an erratic path. The spirit now trailed behind her. Now it was time for a show of her own agility. If the oni wished to close the distance, she would answer by closing the distance. She darted between the small oni’s legs, continuing past Suika. With the passing of inky black shadow, the two-tailed cat shifted back into her humanoid form. With a sweep of her arm, she issued a silent command to the spirit she had summoned well before Suika had arrived. It answered with a chilling screech, twisting around to strike Suika in the back of the head.

The kasha's evasiveness was a bother, but for the moment Suika could accept a warmup of smashing a few undead minions. She certainly hoped this was just a start.

"Hey, no fair bein' all quick like that!"

The oni began decelerating the moment the cat passed under her, raising a hand to deal with the burning skull screaming toward her. But when the deva heard the shriek from behind, her plan changed in an instant. She seemed to trip forward, her head grazing just under the vicious strike from behind, and landed flat on her face--and, with the spirit in front moving too fast to change course, she let the two annoyances take care of each other before lifting herself back to her feet and dusting herself off.

"Tryin' ta gang up on me, sis? What a devious lil' cat y'are! Hopin' ya won't have any objection ta me evenin' the odds!"

Reaching up between her horns, Suika plucked a few strands of light orange hair from her scalp before setting them aflutter in her foe's general direction with a quick blast of warm air from her lungs. In flight, each hair transformed in the blink of an eye into a miniature version of Gensokyo's own avatar of parties herself, joined by more that seemed to form out of the oni's very breath. The oni-cloud, over a dozen mini-Suikas, landed, trampling the stone below to try to encircle the hellcat.

"Let's make it a real party!"

The little drunkard picked up a femur from the bone-pile, hefting it overhead as if readying a downward smash with a club as she charged the cat once more, this time with her miniature copies doing their best to cut off most of Orin's angles of escape.

The skulls shattered as they collided the crushed bone tumbling down into down to the earth and the burning blue wisps of flames. The kasha’s grin dimmed and she rolled her eyes with a bit of annoyance as the two evil spirits obliterated their corporeal forms. “Ya damn numbskulls are no help at all... I swear, ya haven’t got a speck of dust in your heads, the whole lot of ya deaders... or maybe there’s just too much dust...” ‘Right. Now back to the Oni, Sis, she’ got herself a club now... nyahahaha, oh that’s funny... she’s got a club an’ a club... by the way they’re getting closer an’ ya might just want to do something ‘bout that.’

It wasn’t more than a trifle to summon a more spirits to her, but she knew that Suika would attempt to press the advantage. She’d have to put a little more distance between the two of ‘em and take the time to concentrate properly to invoke more of her precious minions, and that was made all the much harder with a whole host of miniature oni heading her way. Orin looked the over the rolling tide of auburn-haired pandemoniac horde. She wouldn’t be able to run forever. ‘She’s lookin’ to force me in a corner with these small fry.. even I won’t be able to dodge ‘em all.’ The kasha’s twin tails curved downwards from their base, the fur on both of them bristling. She looked down at her feet... they were almost upon her.

She spared a precious second to glance to her left towards the massive shore of bone just past the rollin’ sea of demons; her eyes narrowing as the focus of her gaze darted back along a path back to the small hole in the ground behind her. Right by the first of the mini-oni. With a brief gesture the hellcat created a tight band of yellow fire centered about her, at about the height of her ankles. “Let me prepare a warm welcome for ya.” She turned the hellish wheel with a sweep of her foot and it burst into a brief nova of flame that was enough to stagger the first few oni. The kasha dove towards the hole, diminishing once again into a black shadow trailing two brands of fire. If she couldn’t go over the army, she’d go under them. Navigating the network of lava tubes was tricky at the best of times, she doubt she’d be able to safely use that little trick again with Suika.

Orin dashed along the lavaduct, reaching its narrowing exit right below a pile of the broken remains of countless sinners. It took her longer than she wanted to claw up and over the edge, and she was just about out when the pile of bones she was levering against gave way, causing her claws to slip and her hindquarters to fall back into the hole, followed by a small avalanche of ribs and vertebrae and other bits of miscellany that wedged her into the hole. The cat's velvety ears flattened against her head as she felt a rising wave of panic.

She was stuck.

The Suikas quickly recovered from Orin's distraction, their leader scanning the battlefield for a surprise attack until her eyes fell upon the half-buried kasha. It seemed the Minisuika Lava Tunnel Search Party wouldn't be needed after all; still, the trio had already donned head-mounted flashlights, and so climbed in the entrance with the new mission of blocking any escape should the enemy worm her way back into the tube.

"Silly cat," said the full-size oni, hefting the bone club over her shoulder as she strolled leisurely in Orin's direction, letting some of the miniatures run ahead and surround her. "Tunnels aren't for you. You are a cat."

Sure hope this is a trap. Wouldn't be very fun if she really turned out to be such a weak opponent. She took a swig from her gourd before reaching the kasha, sneering down at the trapped cat in the hopes of provoking her into springing whatever trick she had planned. Preferably before it was fully prepared.

"This is what happens when ya rely on silly lil' tricks, kitten. Sooner or later, ya manage ta screw one up, and then yer left helpless against the first person ta come along with some plain old..."--her sneer grew into a grin--"brute..."--the drunken fighter raised her makeshift club over her head, ready to swing down and knock her foe out of the fight, if Orin didn't act quickly--"STRENGTH!"

((I'm going to move to much shorter, two paragraph-ish posts to try to quicken things up. I just wanted to do a little set up for a battle royale!))

Panic had almost completely dulled the small cat’s senses. She was going to lose. She didn’t want to lose, not like this...this was pathetic. The kasha’s temper flared at the very absurdity her getting caught in hole like a rat, waiting to be bludgeoned like a stupid animal. It quickly rekindled the smoldering coals in her heart that the wave of panic had cooled. She wasn’t going to lose. Not like this at least. With a renewed effort, the kasha’s legs kicked furiously to gain purchase on the rim of volcanic stone. It took a precious second or two, but she managed to anchor both sets of claws in the rock, giving her the leverage to push herself up and out. The blunder had cost her precious time. Time afforded to her by the oni’s plodding pace. The hellcat shifted from side to side, loosening her confines, all the while tensing her legs. Well, that was the easy part.

Orin looked out at the blue wisps of flame that hovered over the surface of the black rock; the countless host of spirits looked like sapphire stars burning in an inverted black sky. It seemed endless. She called to all within her reach, closing her eyes as she gathered them to her. The kasha’s command drew the spirits in like a siren’s call. The accursed souls drew closer still to the broken remains of the nameless dead, descending upon the mass grave like shooting stars. The spirits seemed to blink from existence as they collided with the skeletal remains, like stars crossing the event horizon of a hellish abyss. Only a handful of the spirits had made it to Orin before Suika was upon her once again.

"This is what happens when ya rely on silly lil' tricks, kitten. Sooner or later, ya manage ta screw one up, and then yer left helpless against the first person ta come along with some plain old..."

The cat opened her eyes, the blood red rubies burning with their own hellish light. The ground around Suika had begun to lurch, small eruptions of azure flame causing bones to scatter about her and the kasha.

“brute...”

The dead stirred and Orin steeled her nerve, waiting for just the right instant. She had to hold until Suika had fully committed to the attack, and use that small fraction of a second following to counter. It was an incredibly narrow window.

“STRENGTH!”

The oni’s club reverberated as it struck; the crushing blow splintered bone. The bone of a horned skeleton that had flung itself in the way of the strike. Propelled by the force of the blow, a curve fragment of the skull clipped against the hellcat’s forehead opening a shallow wound and a few splinters, including the fragment of a fang, grazed across the fur of her forelimbs. The unliving shield crumpled under the weight of the blow, the azure light shining from the one socket left in it’s half obliterated skull dimming. Another two skeletons grappled with against the oni’s prodigious strength, one clutching Suika’s weapon arm in its rending grip while the other clung to the pandemoniac’s skirt and waist. The skeletons struggled with all their profane might to wrest the small oni to the ground, but the hellcat knew it would be a vain effort. She would not fault them, they had done exactly as she had wanted.

She sprung up and away from the hole, turning a magically somersault. She shifted to her humanoid form as she tumbled landing on her feet in a wreath of blue flame. The cut above her eye throbbed painfully, but she blocked it out as she spoke the dark words of a harsh, ancient tongue.

“Ash kash'kat snaga'ghul-as gurum-ishi thraka'tuluk.”

The odd glyphs scrawled upon the ribbon bound about her left leg glimmered as the surrounding darkness of old hell deepened. As she spoke the colour of the flame shifted to a deep indigo.

“Ash kash’kat burzum-ishi krimpatul.”

The instant she had spoke the last word of her fell invocation, the dark flame around her poured downwards through the layers of bone, dust, and ash, causing the entire mound to tremble violently. More of the dead answered her call, scraping there way from their mass tomb to claw at the oni. The kasha wiped her blood from her brow, and out of her eye, though the blood from her shallow wound made her grim smile all the more horrific.

"Ha!" the horned terror laughed, "Knew ya had somethin' up yer sleeve! But these jokers ain't gonna do much on their own!" She let fall the ruined femur-club, having cracked it in two along with the skull that had defended the corpse-collector. With a swift twist of the oni's limbs and waist, and a deafening crunch of bone, the two new attackers were swiftly dealt with, sending more fragments of bone Rin's way--or to where she had been. "You'll hafta do better'n tha--hey where'd ya go?"

The instant she had spoke the last word of her fell invocation, the dark flame around her poured downwards through the layers of bone, dust, and ash, causing the entire mound to tremble violently. More of the dead answered her call, scraping there way from their mass tomb to claw at the oni.

"...Oh. Now that is better!" She stomped the first skeletal hand to grab at her ankles, and the second, but with so much of the boneyard coming to life at once, it wasn't long until a few got hold of her, and her tiny copies fared no better. Despite the crunching and shattering of bone, the pile of skeletons clinging to her only continued to grow. The boneyard had buried the Tiny Pandemonium.

But it would take more than that to bring down an oni like Suika.

A low rumble arose from the ever-growing pile of skeletons atop the drunkard, growing louder by the second, as the mound began to shudder... and bulge outward, an enormous humanoid form taking shape under the bones. The oni's voice boomed outward, muffled by the intervening bone. "Finally! Now it's a party! Hope y'don't mind me bringin' my own reinforcements to th'battle!"

The gargantuan beast's mouth opened wide, the Deva having grown large enough that the clinging skeletons could no longer cover it, exhaling a great cloud of miniatures of herself which drifted to the ground, grappling with the necrotic army when they landed, some winning and crushing undead bones to dust, others disappearing in puffs of smoke when their skeletal foes got the better of them. Still more dozens followed with the Pandemonium's next exhalation.

She paused to crush a skeleton between her teeth that had foolishly tried to crawl into her mouth, before expelling another mist of copies from her lungs and shaking most of the raised spirits from her body. The great monster's eyes glinted sharply as she turned her gaze to the kasha herself. "Raise as many as ya want... I'll smash 'em all to dust!"

Despite the oni's big talk, the rivulets of blood running from where the skeletons' claws had pricked her betrayed the fact that she wasn't an entirely invincible monster after all, the effect only hightened when she began to shrink back down, not quite to her normal size, but enough to be merely imposing rather than terrifying. "Don'tcha worry, I ain't gonna stay like that. Wouldn't be a fair fight."

The kasha watched as the skeletons buried the small two-horned terror alive in the dead. She doubted that the oni would be so easily bested, but she was not prepared to for Suika to become a massive horned behemoth. The oni’s bellowing voice caused her to cringe, covering coal black feline ears to drown out the sound. She watched the oni brush away the skeletons like gnats. Suika even went so far as to crush one in her mouth. She doubted that the skeletons would be able to do more than scrape the oni, but even the smallest wounds in sufficient number could bring down the behemoth.

“Death by a thousand cuts, sis. That’s a torture fit for the damned, y’know.”

It was complete as the two hordes met the tunnel was filled with a cacophony of splintering bones, guttural hisses, and screams. Ah the sounds of home. The first wave of Rin’s deathless horde had shattered against the oni’s might, like the sea of the dust and broken bone crashing upon the rocks. Suika wasn’t the only one fielding reinforcements and the rolling tides of skeletons were far from exhausted. More of the dead rose from the pile to join the fray, attacking with a mindless zeal and singular purpose.

Only to be crushed to dust as they met the fray. “Oh ya damned idiots, not like that you fools. Like this!” The nearest three undead turned their attentions to their master, completely pausing in their assault as the kasha clawed at the air furiously in demonstration. The small lapse in their focus was all the time it took for one of the mini-oni to bash through the three of them, scattering their bones like matchsticks. Completely forgetting her previous wound, Orin slapped her forehead with the palm of her hand.

‘Nyaaa, that smarts...’ She wiped the blood from her brow to clear her vision and flung it to blackened earth. The blood crazed smile never left her face.

She knew there was no way that she could sustain summoning this many dead, there were limits to what even she could do. She surveyed the entangled lines of oni and the dead. ‘These damn deaders aren’t worth the space they take up, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be useful. I know just what to do.’ With a sweeping gesture, the kasha commanded the dead to withdraw from the orderless mass of oni and fall back into ranks.

While they were weaker individually, Orin was directing the skeletons to surround and isolate smaller groups of Suika’s spawnlings, pressing the numerical superiority of the dead to completely overwhelm the divided groups of the oni.

The hellcat had also directed large portion of the of undead to hook around behind the oni to ensnare the demon and her army. She would surround them completely and crush them in one massive assault. This would thin the ranks of the dead in the front, but if the center held, there would be nowhere for Suika to go. She lead her legion from the front, casting an exploding wheel of blue flame at the largest grouping of the demonettes.

“Death by a thousand cuts, sis. That’s a torture fit for the damned, y’know.”

"One thousand won't be nearly enough, if these weaklings're the best ya can do. An' a fragile lil' kitty like you oughtta go down with 1 good smash!"

Ever more miniatures popped into being all around the oni, seeming to emanate in a fine mist from her very pores. Vast as the boneyard was, Suika's own reserves were just as limitless. Neither army would be exhausted any time soon, and so it came down to a contest of maneuvering to take down the enemy leader. And the oni army was actually losing ground, somehow!

While they were weaker individually, Orin was directing the skeletons to surround and isolate smaller groups of Suika’s spawnlings, pressing the numerical superiority of the dead to completely overwhelm the divided groups of the oni.

That might have been enough to secure victory against an oni like Yuugi, who relied only on sheer strength to crush any opponent, but the little devil facing down Orin wasn't a complete stranger to battlefield tactics. She wouldn't let such a simple attempt at defeat in detail bring her whole army down.

"Watermelon Army, regroup! Form up on me! Hedgehog formation if ya can't break through!" Shouting orders at herselves wasn't necessary, but it was more fun to play general this way.

All around, the Deva's squads of tiny demons charged the surrounding lines of skeletons, joining up into larger groups. Not all made it to the main body of the army, but most were able to reinforce each other at least a little. Where the surrounding foes were too dense or their own numbers too small, the individual units formed densely packed circles--multiple ranks deep where more than a handful were together--presenting a wall of horns and fists to any attacking undead, so no single soldier could be flanked. They fought bravely, but one by one, those that couldn't make it through fell to the spirits' assault. A tactic like that couldn't save them, only delay their demise, and make the enemy pay for it.

Those that did reach the still-moderately-huge general formed a battle line facing the main bulk of the Kasha's army, with smaller skirmishing units to the sides and back to prevent harassing undead from breaking the main formation. Every new Suika popping into being swiftly marched either to bolster the main line or replenish the screening squads. Trying to save the isolated groups would be a waste.

Oddly enough, Suika herself stayed near the center of her main group, behind the main line. What kind of oni leads from the rear?

She lead her legion from the front, casting an exploding wheel of blue flame at the largest grouping of the demonettes.

The Boss herself had to rush forward for a moment to intercept that with a massively enlarged fist. Having the center of her battle line obliterated would have taken a few seconds too long to regroup from, with Rin's army waiting to pounce at any opportunity. This way, the only damage not repaired by a single wave of reinforcements was her own singed knuckles.

"Yeowch, you an' yer constant distractions!" The Pandemoniac General paused to gulp down a mouthful of sake. "Ah well. Gotta do what ya can ta deal with my stronger soldiers, right?" An innocently cheerful grin plastered over the walking party's face; the kind that, in a situation like this, could only be hiding something devious. "But I think ya forgot another advantage my army's got on yours. Y'see, sis, I can see through all my eyes."

With that, Gensokyo's Little Terror spun on her heel, facing away from the enemy general. "Caught ya, sneaky cat!" An earth-shattering war stomp sent a bone-crushing shockwave straight for the flanking group, leaving a magma-bleeding fissure in its wake.

Orin watched the flanking group of cursed dead burn as magma bleed from the great cracks left in the wake of Suika. The wretched dead danced in the hellish flame as they struggled to break free, not out of a self-preservation but the overriding compulsion to fill her command. They clambered towards the oni horde and the harsh guttural crepitations and clattering were replaced by a crackling noise as the consuming heat of the molten rock cracked the bones before turning it to cinders. A few of the half-consumed dead dragged their collapsing bodies ever towards the oni horde. Their deathless persistence met a quick end.

“Nyaahaahahaaa, what a sight this is. So this is the might of the beast that forced the tengu to bended knee.” The hellcat breathed out an exaggerated sigh “Oh, my poor darlings.”

The kasha’s burning ruby eyes burned all the more brighter as she watched the skeletons writhe in the flame, the smothering waves of ash an brimstone further deepening her bloodlust. Suika’s blustering did little to shake her confidence. ‘Typical oni pride, but it seems like ya went and underestimated her a mite. Alright, alright, a whole cartload. She’s crafty and sly. But so am I. Just don’t go gettin’ careless, sis, pride isn’t just limited to oni, y’know.’ While the Two-horned terror took a casual swig from her gourd, the kasha drew more accursed souls to the mass graveyard, bolstering her own reinforcements. She would would need their numbers for this to work.

The cursed dead drew about the kasha, surrounding her completely. She took advantage of the confusion to assume her feline form to better hide amongst the chaotic mass of the dead, doing her best to obscure her exact location amongst them. It wasn’t as easy as she would have liked. The stinging wounds on her forelimbs bit into her speed and she was being extra cautious to avoid as many of the extra sets of eyes as she could.

The vast horde of the dead withdrew, massing into a column of ranks before surging forward in massive clatter of teeth and claws. For all appearances, the kasha had committed her undead minions into a frontal assault. One brutal, spectacular blow to break the oni’s defenses. The vanguard of the army broke upon the ranks of the oni, thrashing, scraping and clawing at Suika’s frontline. Yet the full assault never came. The frontal attack was a feint, a distraction, as her the horde of skeletons split into two columns to surround the oni army on two sides. The full force of one half of the dead trampled the the smaller screening detachments of oni back to vapor and began to press against the oni from the sides, though the undead attackers were taking grievous casualties.

As the melee joined. there was a sudden swell in ranks on Suika’s left. Having reverted to her humanoid form, Orin leapt along with several of the larger dead from the middle of the grouping. She vaulted above the two clashing lines. In her hand was a black card emblazoned with a burning wheel and glyphs in red. A spellcard.

“ Apology:「 "The Needles of Yore and the Vengeful Spirits in Pain"」”

Dense clouds of hellish spikes materialized in the air about the hellcat, suspended briefly before pouring down like a tempest of stinging rain and hail. They hurtled down upon Suika, the Suikalings, even her own undead troops. The kasha wasn’t able to direct any one particular needle with any degree of precision, but having driven Suika into a tight defensive formation, there wasn’t a particular need to aim.

“If a thousand cuts won’ do, Sis, maybe an entire mountain of needles can purge even your soul.”
The words rolled off her tongue with a particular delight.

'Oh crap! All those needles...' Trying to smash through that head-on would be the same as forfeiting the fight.

"Damn sneaky cat!"

Using her copies as a shield wouldn't help, as they were still part of her, and so the little oni did the only thing she could manage quickly enough to get something between herself and the needles before they reached her: she bent down, digging her fingers into the battlefield's stony floor, and hefted a great slab of volcanic rock overhead like a makeshift umbrella. As many mini-Suikas as could manage huddled around her ankles, sharing what shelter they could, but there was space for no more than a dozen. Still, she had bought herself a few precious moments before Orin's million needles could chip away her shield.

And chip it away they did, like a warp-speed demonstration of the wind and water eroding a cliff face. The shelter she had made for herself wouldn't last long. But it was enough.

"Qi of Oni:「"Deep Fog Labyrinth"」"

The worn-down slab of rock fell a few feet, held up now by the miniatures huddled under it for shelter, as a dense cloud of white fog flowed out from under it and toward those of the cat's raised skeletons that hadn't already been destroyed by their master's own attack.

The mist that was Suika traced a path through the ranks of the undead, leaving behind a thick trail of nearly-unmoving blue danmaku bullets. Few of the skeletal soldiers were hit directly, but many more found themselves surrounded so that any but the slowest and most careful movements would send them right back to the grave.

After neutralizing much of the zombie army this way, Suika began to drift upward, toward Orin herself, still trailing spheres of energy in her wake. Ten thousand tiny voices spoke in unison, adding up to a sound that was, in aggregate, almost like the oni's normal speech.

"Not bad! Looks like ya came out a little ahead with that one. Guess that's what I get fer underestimatin' ya." Even as she complimented her opponent, the onicloud continued to draw ever nearer to the cat, needles passing harmlessly between the near-microscopic particles she had transformed herself into. "But just cause ya outmanevered me once doesn't mean yer gonna win! Lettin' myself get taken down by the first spellcard ya threw out would be a disgrace to oni-kind after all."

She stopped well short of any attempt to engulf the kasha, instead spiraling a couple of times around her and leaving a token minefield--easily escapable by flying up or down--before diverting toward a series of magma tubes jutting out from the wall.

The oni’s prodigious strength never ceased to amaze the hellcat. “Oh I never knew oni were so damn interestin’. Nyaaaahahaha-haa-ha. There’s much more to you than ya let on, Two-Horned Sis. Makes me want your corpse all that much more. Let’s continue this lovely dance.”

She couldn’t help but think that the two-horned terror was corralling her along, leaving two obvious escape routes from a field of scarcely moving danmaku. What was left of the dead she had raised were effectively immobilized. A precious few seconds ticked by as she tried to decipher this new change to the oni’s tactics. The more time she spent guessing, the less time she’d have to react. The kasha broke for the bottom exit, rolling to avoid the bullets as she dove. It was only a token barrier, but some of the bullets still managed to singe the dark green velvet of her dress. She spared a glance down at her skirt. “Nyaa- my dress is going to be completely ruined by the end of this.”

The hellcat landed on her feet with all the grace expected of one of her kind and with a quick glance got her bearings. It would be next to impossible to precisely locate the oni’s point of exit. Not only were there a myriad of tunnels that had a number of a exits, there were several that were too narrow for her to pass through, even in her feline form. The narrowness of the passage would be no obstruction to the cloud of pin-prick sized oni. The rampaging cloud could pass through any number of passages. It’d be near impossible to avoid the cloud of ‘em. Impossible to avoid a cloud. That’s just what she needed.

She knew what she was going to do. She frantically gathered up great armfuls of the sulfur dust in her skirt and tossed the yellow dust up into the air. The few remaining undead she had summoned helped their mistress by mimicking her efforts. The undead cannibalized their fallen kin, using the broad, flat bits and pieces of bone as crude shovels to gather as much of the volatile dust as possible. With a cruel smile she nodded towards the skeletons imprisoned in the tangle of bullets. The undead did not hesitate at her command, and threw themselves upon the bullets, their skeletons shattered as they thinned the minefield some. Orin hadn’t needlessly sacrificed her minions... the concussive force of the impact helped to scatter the sulfur dust further and she had freed several of the spirits from their bony vessels. The spirits answered her call and several large hitodama entered in a wide orbit around her.

She flapped the edge of her skirt like a broad green fan, causing the falling particles of sulfur to billow in the air, choking the immediate surroundings of the tunnel with a great yellow cloud. The kasha repeated this action twice, as she dared to delay, and tried to fill as much of the space as possible with the noxious gas. The heavy yellow smog filled the tunnel with a thick yellow haze and poured into lavaducts.

There wasn’t any chance of the sulfur cloud overtaking the oni cloud so long as Suika maintained her current pace, but it would definitely smoke her out should she choose to stall. Things were almost ready. “The lot of you deaders ready? Just a little bit longer, my darlings.” With a smile, Orin evenly dispersed the accursed souls into the sulfur cloud, directing the the vile spirits to cover as many exits as possible.

Orin brushed as much as the sulfur from her dress as she could. ‘Yeah, that’s definitely not coming out. And these holes... Ah Satori-sam'nya's gonna skin me alive. I s'pose I have no choice but to win.’ Without another second’s delay, the kasha gathered her cart and made for the small pit Suika had excavated when the oni had pulled up the stone to use as a shield. She drew another of her spell cards... all that was left was to wait.
