[Open] Bloody dusk into scarlet dawn

Postby Flandre Scarlet » 11 Aug 2009 07:39

The youngest vampire of the Scarlet Devil mansion had strange dreams that night. Dreams of faces from so impossibly long ago she could no longer put even the slightest detail to them. Dreams of myriad voices, washing in waves like the sea, rising into a crescendo of angry yells and panicked shrieks when she waded in them. Dreams where blood trickled from the ceiling and rolled down the walls in thick fluid trails as masked strangers stood round her, silently watching her eat. And for the first time in untold decades, the old nightmare. Once again the the sounds of crackling flame and splintering wood pounded her ears, and the thick, nauseating stench of sweat and gore assaulted her nose. She felt the familiar terror of fleeing with nowhere to go, heard the shouting voices and animal snarls once more, the sickening, choking tightness around her throat, the dim perception of something breaking. Even deep in slumber she knew what came next; the head splitting explosion of pain from her spine and the sound of her own scream in her ears.

Flandre was scrambling blindly to sit up before her eyes even opened. She hadn't actually screamed this time, but the sudden realization that she wasn't in her own room didn't help her at all. It had been so long she had been in this room she had forgotten where it was. The window was much larger than her little slit, and the dull red light filtering through thre drawn curtains made her eye sockets ache. The expensive bed sheet would need a good wash had she been able to sweat, the degree to which it was wrapped around her waist testified to that. Only dimly aware that she was awake, the trailing fingers of nightmare still clinging onto the edge of her perception, Flandre attempted to console herself with what she usually did after the nightmare. Still breathing heavily, Flandre's fingers clumsily attacked the buttons on her vest, and quickly yanked her undershirt over her head. Her trembling hands felt their way across her bare back to the point where her wings anchored to her shoulders, recoiling slightly at the touch of metal, before hovering over the dull ache that usually followed the dream.

She let out a slightly rattled sigh of relief. She had nearly forgotten about the nightmare, and as her mind began to spin back up and take in the fact she had simply been moved to another room in the mansion, she couldn't help but feel a little silly as well as precariously on edge. Brushing a lock of golden hair out of her eyes, Flandre took a moment to look around the room, turning in place to try and figure out where she was.

Sakuya had been dreaming...a time before her arrival at the Scarlet Devil Mansion, before her encounter with Remilia that would change her life forever. She could not see anything clearly, everything seemed out of focus bit she could make out shapes of people and different flashes of color before her eyes. She tried to reach out but realized that she as bound to something. She tried to call out to the shapes in front of her, she could not hear her own voice. She then struggled to try to break free of what was holding her, to no avail. She kept trying until one of the shapes came closer, almost filling her entire view.

You...you shall be my greatest accomplishment... A voice broke the silence in her dream.

Sakuya was pulled back to consciousness at the sound of violent shuffling. She shook her head and rubbed her eyes as the memories of events from the evening before flooded her mind. She then realized that she should have been watching over Flandre and her eyes shot open when she remembered. She had taken a seat next to the bed to make sure that she would be there is Flandre needed anything and to she Flandre that she was not in any strange new place but still safely at home. She looked at the bed and found Flandre sitting up, bare of her clothes, and drenched in her own sweat.

"Young mistress! What's wrong?" Sakuya stood up to attend to Flandre.

"Sakuya?!" Flandre swivelled around at the sound of the familiar voice, definitely startled but strangely glad. Of all the places she had looked in the room, she had somehow managed to let the maid by the bedside go completely unnoticed. Immediately, Flandre felt how strange it was to be in the room alone with her. She had no real reason to feel awkward about it, in fact Sakuya was usually the only other person in the room when there was another person at all, but somehow this time felt different in a way that mildly bothered Flandre, she seemed . . . settled in.

Still, the expression on Flandre's face was one of relief, even if still somewhat alarmed. Despite the fact she knew that her recurrent nightmare was long before Sakuya's time, Flandre felt intimately secure simply with the knowledge she was close by. Taking a moment to calm down and rub the sleep out of her eyes, Flandre tried to reduce the issue down to a level Sakuya wouldn't be overwhelmed with. "My back hurts"

Postby Remilia Scarlet » 11 Aug 2009 20:43

Remilia's walk around the banks of the misty lake hadn't done much for her mood. Instead of experiencing the therapeutic effect the nighttime atmosphere, the vampire found herself brooding, much as she had been the majority of the dinner party.

Flandre likely still lay asleep in Remilia's own bed on the top floor of the mansion, a room that her little sister seldom had the opportunity to visit. For whatever the reason, Remilia hadn't felt comfortable confining the troubled girl to the basement, a place that Flandre seemed to have developed a certain amount of disdain for almost overnight.

She had no idea what the reason had been, and her one attempt to pry that information from Flandre had been met with no cooperation whatsoever. Remilia had planned to ask again when her sister woke up, who would by then hopefully be in a better mood. The wind was blowing quite vigorously at the moment, which meant that there would be a considerable breeze drifting into her bedroom. Certainly a step up from the muggy, almost unbearable windowless room in the depths of the mansion.

Before she knew it, she was tinkering with the gate in front of her own mansion, having become lost in thought during her approach. Meiling was nowhere to be found, but Remilia didn't care -- she'd given the gate guard a reprieve for the night, along with her head maid, whose only current orders were to keep an eye on her sister.

The same action she was about to perform. Remilia heaved the front door open, closing it firmly behind her, and began the walk up to her own room. Even before she'd reached the end of the hall, her honed auditory abilities picked up voices coming from inside the room.

Was Flandre already awake? Cautious and curious, Remilia slowly put her ear against the door, wondering exactly what was being said behind it.

“I see…so you were just feeling uncomfortable…” Sakuya replied to Flandre. The maid knew that the younger Scarlet was lying, the sweat drenched bed and clothes were evidence enough…and the maid knew a thing or two about waking up from a terrible nightmare.

“It would seem that you need a change of clothes young mistress, please allow me to fetch you something to wear.” Sakuya said while standing up and walking to the wardrobe and opened it, it was then that she remembered that this was Remilia’s room and not Flandre’s. Everything there was Remilia’s trademark pink and red dresses and spare hats. Sakuya immediately stopped time at the realization and sighed.

“How could I have made such an error?” She said to herself before looking back at Flandre, then to the dresses in the wardrobe.

“These would fit her…but I’m not sure if mistress would approve…” Sakuya said to herself before deciding to make a quick run to Flandre’s room and get the girl something to wear from her own set of clothes. She closed the door or the wardrobe and walked over to the door of the room and there she found her mistress with her ear next to, what would’ve been the closed door.

How worrisome…Sakuya thought as she gently closed the door again. She went back to the wardrobe and opened it. Sakuya saw that Remilia’s red dresses would work more favorably with Flandre than the pink ones so she allowed time to flow normally and picked out a red dress as if nothing happened before. She walked back to Flandre and presented the dress.

“Please allow me to help you dress young mistress…” Sakuya said with a smile, but ready to stop time at the drop of a pin depending of Flandre's response.

Uncomfortable, there was a way to put it. Flandre wondered if perhaps she had made it seem like too little of an issue, or if Sakuya was just being oblivious, before coming to the conclusion that it was probably for the best that the incident should be ignored. It certainly put her on edge however, she had been certain up to this point that it was the air in the basement giving her bad dreams, but with the advent of waking up in the older vampire's room in shaking nightmare left her feeling completely lost, and a little afraid.

The mention of fresh clothes however, sounded wonderful. Sleeping in her dusty clothes from a day ago left her feeling uncharacteristically hot and fatigued . . . or maybe it was the nightmare. Flandre mentally shook herself, she refused to consider the latter explanation, not out of any sort of logical, evidence based decision, but out of hope that the heat and the wine had been the only factors and that she would sleep soundly the next night. Settling her mind with action, Flandre nodded to Sakuya, her trembling not disguised as well as she would have liked, and wriggled out of her skirt under the covers. She facetiously considered wearing nothing all day to stay cool, but any deviation from her normal routine frightened her with the thought of another uneasy night.

Flandre lay her skirt on the pile of her other clothes, wishing they would stay that cold when they were dry. She was just about to get out from under the covers when she spotted Sakuya walking back with one of her sisters dresses. Flandre had never put any significant effort into hiding her emotions once in four hundred and ninety five years, and so her expression instantly betrayed her thoughts. Would Remilia's clothes be ever worse than wearing nothing? Would they make her have Remilias dreams, or would absolutely nothing change? She couldn't help but be a little frustrated that the first thing of the day was set to blow over her attempts at being 'normal', but quickly decided that she wanted to be wearing something on the off chance that Mokou was still somewhere in the mansion. Marshaling her features into a semblance of lofty detachment, Flandre managed to repress the brunt of her tremors and climb out of bed in a relatively dignified manner. "Yes please Sakuya." She felt a little awkward standing there, not knowing how one of Remilia's more complicated dresses went on, but the thought of Mokou poking around the mansion kept her rooted to the spot.

Re: [Open] Bloody dusk into scarlet dawn

Sakuya started to dress Flandre in Remilia's red dress. The maid had done this on numerous occasions before whenever Remilia was simply too lazy to get up or put on her own clothes so Sakuya had little trouble in doing to with Flandre. She tried to be as gentle as she could when she needed to tighten the straps at the back of the dress as she did not want the younger Scarlet to think of it as any sort of hostile intent. Sakuya straightened out the dress as she finished and took a good look.

"You look just like mistress in that dress young mistress Flandre. It suits you quite well." Sakuya said to Flandre. She then noticed the mess that was Flandre's hair and walked over to Remilia's dresser and picked up a brush.

"Please have a seat young mistress. I shall brush your hair for you as well." Sakuya said as she pulled out the chair from Remilia's dresser.

The least I could do is make sure she knows that she is in a safe place... Sakuya thought as she smiled at the younger Scarlet.

The dress itself was tight, complex and with a much longer skirt than Flandre was used to. At first she tried to follow everything Sakuya was doing, but gave up when all the straps came into play. She idly wondered how her sister put up with this every morning. Even though the clothes felt restrictive, she could tell it wasn't a bad fit.
Being in strange clothes in a strange place after a strange dream was difficult to come to grips with, and an even stranger compliment from Sakuya did little to detract from the nervous surrealness of the situation. Once again nodding distractedly to the maid, Flandre took her seat infront of the dresser. After a moments inspection, she decided that she didn't really look like her sister, but the thought was still nice, Remilia had always been prettier.

She couldn't help but be surprised by a sudden, violent surge of longing; wishing that her big sister was here with her. Sakuya was a wonderful, familiar point to hold onto in the first alarming minutes of the morning, but she had only known her for a few years. In many ways she got along better with the head maid of the household than with her own sister, but the kind of companionship she so desperately craved for sitting infront of a mirror she didn't remember wearing clothes she'd never seen, was the kind of understanding that can only come from hundreds of years of trust. Flandre gripped the edges of the chair as though it was liable to get up and kick her off, staring nervously at her own haunted expression in the mirror before turning to Sakuya. "Where's big sister? This is her room isn't it? Is she okay?"

Sakuya momentarily cased her brushing of Flandre’s hair at the girl’s question but quickly resumed it.

“The mistress was the one who brought you to this room and allowed you to sleep here. She was also the one who instructed me stay with you and provide you will all that you might need.” Sakuya said as she checked Flandre’s hair. Once she had seen that it was back to normal, she started to do the younger Scarlet’s signature ponytail.

“The mistress has just gone for a walk for a bit around the lake. She will return soon enough. I’m sure that she would be rather pleased that her clothes work so well with her beloved sister.” Sakuya said in a slightly higher volume to make sure that Remilia could hear every word from the other side of the door. Sakuya placed the brush down on the dresser and placed her hands on Flandre’s shoulders.

“How would you like to come with me and greet the mistress good morning? I’m sure she would be pleasantly surprised.” Sakuya suggested as she looked at Flandre from the mirror, her smile not fading.

Flandre let a small sigh of relief escape her. So nothing had happened after she fell asleep, she had simply been put upstairs for whatever reason, the guests were gone, the house was the same and Remilia was fine. The embarrassed grin did wonders to hide what was going on behind the eyes looking back at her from the mirror and her posture slipped from near ladylike to simply tired, the death grip on her seat loosening slightly.

"I don't think she would like me wearing her dress. She's probably still mad at me for yesterday . . ." Flandre fell silent for a moment, content to watch Sakuya running the brush through her hair in the mirror. In truth, she would still have liked to avoid her sister for the day and waited until she was sure she had forgotten, but her aching discomfort would only be eased by speaking to her and she fully well knew it. Flandre kicked her feet back and forth absently, trying to decide between possible punishment or gnawing anxiety all day, before she realized Sakuya was done with her hair. "I'd still like to come with you though" The words were out before she had quite realized she had made up her mind, but she had honestly meant them. Trying to save a little face, Flandre hopped off the stool and checked herself once more in the mirror. She deemed her appearance about as good as she could expect without 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep, and took a deep breath to brace for whatever Remilia's reaction would be, holding onto Sakuya's sleeve and fixing the closed door with a misgiving stare.

Sakuya was glad that Flandre gave her idea a chance. She knew that all the comforting she could do for the younger Scarlet would be nothing compared to what her sister could provide her just with her presence. Sakuya then remembered that Remilia was eavesdropping on the door earlier and wondered if she was still there.

"Well then...let us depart." She said to Flandre while walking to the door. She stopped for a moment and took a small breath.

Is the mistress still there? Sakuya wondered before opening the door.

"A-sah!" Meiling shouted, thrusting a fist underneath the leaves of the same willow tree she'd been napping beneath during the day. "A-too! A-tah! Ahhhtatatatatatatatatataaah!! Ahhhh-shoooowah!" she finished with, an enormously sweeping kick flying through the air to land on the trunk of the giant tree, shaking the drooping branches in the night air.

"Phew, heh, that's probably enough for tonight. Mistress Remilia gave me the night free, but if I miss my shift tomorrow, she'll wring my neck. And then Sakuya'll kill me," she chuckled, wiping her brow with the front panel of her dress, enjoying the breeze on her legs as it was lifted. "All right, to bed then, after one last check on the gate." She made due haste towards the front walls, the familiar site of the wrought iron gates coming into view as she closed to within a few paces. "Okie dokie, looks like we're... wait a minute."

She took a few more steps towards the gate, reaching up to the heavy lock which hung from the massive chains interwoven into the bars of the portal. ... it's open! Somebody's intruding! She quickly snapped the lock back shut and turned around, all ease from earlier disappearing as her fight instincts surged to the forefront. Gotta get back to the mansion!

Gravel flew from the path leading up to the front door as Meiling sprinted down it, her arms swinging back and forth and her legs pumping. She leapt the entire flight of stairs up to the front porch, reaching for the doors to the main hallway. Find the mistress, and make sure she's safe! She took the stairs up to the sleeping quarters two at a time, all pretence of stealth forgone as her heavy footfalls rang through the entire shadowy mansion. Not now, not when I just told Sakuya things were going to be different, tell me she's all right, tell me she's-

"Remil- I mean, Mistress Remillia!" she shouted as she took the corner to her bedroom, skidding on the wooden floor until her shoes gripped again. She ran up to the head of the household and put both her sweaty, dirt-stained hands upon her in concern. "Are you all right Mistress Remilia? I think we might have an intruder, the front gates were unlocked!"

Sakuya opened the door and saw that Meiling had her hands on Remilia's shoulder and was yelling about intruders and the gate being unlocked. Sakuya immediately stopped time for everyone. The head maid took a deep breath...

"MEEEEEIIIIIILLLLLIIIIIIIINNNNGGG!!!!" She yelled at the top of her lungs. She then spent several moments trying to calm down. She took another deep breath before returning time back to normal.

"What do you think you are doing to the mistress?" She said while giving Meiling a death glare.

"Oh, you're up Sakuya!" Meiling responded, before looking down to her hands. "O-oh! S-sorry Mistress!" she said, pulling her grubby mitts off from the vampire. "What am I... oh, right! I was just checking the front gate after finishing my regimen, a-and I saw the lock was open, and I wanted to make sure Mistress Remillia was okay, and, and..." Her voice petered off as Sakuya's glare began to penetrate her fully. "U-um... did I do something wrong?"

Re: [Open] Bloody dusk into scarlet dawn

Quickly recognizing the voices as Flandre and Sakuya, Remilia had listened patiently for a while.

She'd heard Flandre wake, confused about her surroundings, as well as Sakuya's subsequent attempts to placate her. From the sound of it, Sakuya had changed her sister's clothes, and instead of leaving the room, she'd opted to dress Flandre in one of Remilia's own outfits.

Not that Remilia particularly minded. She was simply glad she didn't have to be the one to dress her sister.

And before she could react, the two of them seemed to be moving toward the door, if the footsteps were any indication. And there was no way Remilia was going to get away in time not to be caught eavesdropping. That left exactly one course of action open to her.

She was about to preemptively fling the door open when Meiling's desperate wail assaulted her ears. Before she could even turn around, the gate guard was upon her.

Remilia cocked an eye to her hysterical redhead, wondering if Meiling would suddenly remember just who she was addressing. Yet the girl continued to latch onto her like a frightened dog. Instead of berating the girl, which obviously hadn't worked in the past, she tried a new tactic, offered to her in the form of a juicy piece of gossip handed to her by a fairy maid whose name she couldn't be bothered to remember.

"Sakuya is right behind this door, Meiling. You don't want her to see you in such a state, do you?" Remilia warned.

"Hmm, I suppose I'm used to having Sakuya secure the latch for me. I'll have to remember that in the future," she added nonchalantly.

And then Sakuya had flung the door open, and the entire scene had unfolded before them, Sakuya spouting off at Meiling and the gate guard cowering in fear.

The vampire had an idea.

"Sakuya, Meiling was just informing me that I'd left the gate ajar when I'd returned. There's nothing to worry about," Remilia promised.
