[Open] Lapses in Time

Postby Flandre Scarlet » 17 Oct 2010 11:34

As the sun finished its journey over the distant horizon and night was beginning to settle in, all was rather peaceful within the Scarlet Devil Mansion. The meager number of windows that decorate the building were slowly lit one by one, the ancient estate's masters slowly reawakening from their daily slumber. Even as this was going on, the mansion’s ever vigilant (and seemingly tireless) servants took to their evening posts and duties.

From deep beneath the Scarlet Devil mansion, a shadow slowly crept out into the dimly lit, red carpet covered, halls of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. It glanced to the left…and then to the right, before stepping out into the light. From the outside, through the few windows the mansion had, one can see a small figure with branch-like wings scurry past the windows. It first appeared in one of the first floor window, before once again being sighted on the third floor, then finally stopping near the balcony of the second story. It walked past the balcony door…then doubled back, pressing itself against the glass, its wings outstretched.

Having the clock installed in her room was the worst decision ever made. In the past, Flandre could easily retreat into the recesses of her mind, thinking up imaginary worlds in an attempt to kill some time. However, now with that new addition to her room, impatience constantly gnawed at her as she waited for the clock hands to move, every second as painful as the last. She could have sworn the seconds actually went backwards on several occasions! She wasn’t exactly anticipating anything in particular, but just waiting alone struck home how slowly everything went by; it was if the cursed mechanical contraption, with its orderly gears and precise motions, had shackled down her normally free and chaotic perceptions of time.

Flandre looked outside the balcony window, focusing her eyes on the garden outside, the young vampire rather perplexed by how unfamiliar everything seemed today. She had briefly lost her way around the mansion halls, the mansion interior seemingly grander than usual to her, perhaps something had changed since she was down in the depths of the mansion. In fact, how long had she spent idling away? That question festered in her mind, even as thousands others began to form…

Why were the trees all burning in shades of red and brown within the glow of the mansion lights?

How long was it since Remilia had her prized rose garden redecorated, its red pools of crimson roses suddenly mixed with dark purple shades of foreign flowers?

Why hadn’t she noticed these things until now?!

PIK CRACK

Flandre’s increasingly worrying train of thought was soon broken by the sharp sound coming from the glass in front of her. The once clear barrier between her and the outside of world was now a spider web of cracks and fractures. Then in an instant it all came tumbling down, a waterfall of shards cascading down onto the balcony’s tiled floor.

“ Big sis is going to be so mad…” Flandre said worriedly, looking around for signs of any witnesses. She didn’t mean to break it, things like this just happened!

Had any been there, they have likely been long gone, or had simply gone unnoticed due to Flandre’s wandering mind; there were more pressing matters to attend to, like this strange lapse in time. Flandre quietly turned to the door handle and stepped out, opting for the more refined fashion of exiting instead of just stepping out through the door. After all, only prisoners and thieves go through broken windows, and young Flandre was certainly neither of those!

The young girl leaned over the railings and looked down onto the mansion’s courtyard for a brief moment. Certain changes have been made around here…or she hadn’t noticed until now; it certainly wasn’t some trick of her mind, some imaginary landscape painted on some mad artists whim (if then, that artist was certainly more dull than mad, in any case.). She could smell the air, feel the wind…this was real. The young vampire lifted herself on the railing and then proceeded jump down, gliding onto the courtyard, the multicolored branches she called wings glowing as they slowed her fall, allowing her to glide onto the ground.

The seasons were changing. Somehow the long, warm days of summer were getting shorter and shorter, colder and colder. Before much longer, Meiling would need to drag out her winter scarves and gloves. Winter was a hard time for a Gate Guard. It was simply too cold to be staying out all night.

For now, though, it was mostly tolerable. Meiling sent a passing glance to her lantern, checking the strength of the flickering light. She would probably have to go back for more oil some time before sunrise, but that… That was something easily postponed. Once it got later in the night, Meiling could sneakily use that as an excuse to get some warm tea and perhaps a bite of dinner. It would be a waste to leave her post when it was still vaguely warm out-- not when she could take advantage later.

The girl rubbed at her forearms lightly, blowing out a sigh of warm air into the evening sky. It just felt like it was going to be a long night tonight. She wasn’t looking forward to it one bit. She was tip-tapping her feet against the dirt of the mansion entryway, trying to keep herself active and wake herself up. Her little dance nearly-completely distracted her; if not for the sound of Flandre’s shoes tapping against the cobbled path of the mansion courtyard, Meiling might not have noticed her at all.

She turned, fully expecting to see a maid clad in blue. The sight that greeted her was far from Sakuya, however.

“Young Mistress--” She started, her voice wavering with uncertainty and hesitance. Her last meeting with Flandre had not exactly been the best experience. “What brings you out to the court yard tonight?” There was a hidden thought following her words. Wasn’t the young mistress supposed to be kept inside at all times…? Just what was she doing out here, then…?!

“If you need anything, well, then I’m sure we can find Miss Sakuya and she could help--” She was grasping at straws now, feeling uncomfortable with the sudden appearance of such a destructive force.

Indeed, seasons were changing. As part of the cycle of seasons, the temperature is steadilly dropping.

This revelation is what caused an indebted scientist to get to work on a little project of hers. She had promised payment in exchange for teaching her some of the basics she knew about her fighting style. After pondering what the resident of a mansion could need, her position of guard and knowledge of the surroundings drew the conclusion that she stands outside, all day, every day. Then again at night.

And thus she had taken one of her drones and modified it, removing the small tesla coil in its back and in thier place, metal rods. So the small generator of the drone stored heat rather than energy, radiating when it got too hot or even emitting it in blasts if the need arose. This new model was slightly differant from the spider like appearance, earning its model name Firefly. It was with this package, currently a harmless looking metal ball in appearance, that she was approaching the mansion.

The likely familiar roar of fire as she landed near the gate would be enough to identify her to Meiling. She didn't speak as she approached, noticingMeiling had her back turned, addressing a young blonde on the other side of the gate. She remained wordless as her eyes went over the details, red clothing that matched her eyes, possibly related to Remilia? What looked like an impersonation of wing 'arms' without any 'fingers' with colourful gems attatched to them?

If she were anyone else she'd probably have made a joke about cosplaying a christmas tree by now.

The clock that was in Flandre's room is a fairly good metaphor for Gensokyo. Except that this was a clock miles wide with thousands of hands, that ticked at irregular rates, and sometimes vanished and reappeared entirely. So it's not that good a metaphor. But what it means is that four hands, going through independent motions, reached one point at a single time.

Shingyoku was headed to the Scarlet Devil Mansion for a good reason: to continue martial arts cross-training with Meiling. Over the last week, he had been thinking about the potential uses for the stance she had shown him, and wondered what Meiling had come up with for improving her ability to use chi for danmaku. They had to do quite a bit of work to adapt each others' techniques for their individual abilities, as even their chi showed how vastly different they were. But that was the point of training together: what would be the point of training with someone who was exactly like you?

However, things were not quite as planned. Rikako was already there, as was someone he had never met before. However, unlike Rikako, he had read some of Aya's notes: This was Flandre Scarlet, Remilia's sister, extremely dangerous when provoked, and locked in the SDM's basement. Well, apparently the third had changed, as she was out by the gate.

His curiosity won out over his caution, so he landed right beside Rikako, much more quietly. As Rikako didn't address Meiling, he didn't either, instead turning to the scientist and saying quietly to her, "I certainly didn't expect to see you here." Noticing the distinctive round shape of some kind of drone, he continued, "I'm fairly sure that you aren't here for the same reason I am."

Actually being in the courtyard and observing from the mansion were two separate things. Flandre could make out more clearly now the source of color in the Scarlet Devil Mansion’s garden. It was these odd bell-shaped flowers that seem to be sprouting everywhere a little at a time. This did little to sooth her paranoia. Flowers take time to grow; they grow from seeds carefully planted into soil before sprouting out of the soil over the course of weeks or months to finally blossom. In fact this new discovery only served to terrify the young vampire even more.

Flandre looked up when she heard Meiling call out to her. She regarded the gate guard strangely, as if wondering what she was doing there; so surreal was this strange situation to her that it took the girl a brief moment to know whether she was still grounded in reality. Although once she realized it, she quickly ran over, stopping on her side of the gate, hands clutching the bars like some sort of prisoner.

“Meiling, just what’s happened to Sister’s garden?!” The young vampire demanded the gatekeeper, a hand motioning towards all the trees covered in flame colored leaves, “When did someone paint up all these trees? And these flowers!”

The young vampire bent down to pick up one of the new purple flowers flowers, plucking it out of the ground, roots and all, to show the gatekeeper. “When’d these come here? They weren’t there the last I remember!” The young mistress was evidently distressed by this discovery, quickly dropping the uprooted plant and hugging herself. The poor plant scarcely even touched the ground before it simply vanished into dust, Flandre’s subconscious lashing out in her distress.

“You’re outside of the mansion the most often…so you’d likely know more about what’s going on than Sakuya would.” Flandre explained quickly. Not to mention the gate guard was really the closest to her at that point of time. Meanwhile, a dreaded question was festering even more within her mind, crawling down towards her mouth and just begging to be asked.

“…Meiling, how long was I down in the basement?” Flandre asked, a note of fear almost hinted in her voice. Who knew something so trivial was enough to cause her such worry?

Flandre blinked a few times as her nose caught the scent of a human which was following by the odd smell of fire. The younger Scarlet sister turned her attention to the bespectacled newcomer. As Flandre recalled, there had only ever been a select few humans who had come to the mansion in the past, Reimu and Marisa.

Reimu hardly comes by here on a regular basis and Marisa used to come by regularly. This one, however, with her purple hair and long flowing coat, was certainly not Marisa. Even more curious was what the other girl was carrying around with her, some sort of metal object…a toy? The other person she noticed was this other youkai, possibly another guest?

Either way they seem to have come up out of nowhere, or perhaps they eluded her notice.
“Um…who are these people, Meiling?”

“The garden?” She asked, taken aback for a moment by how little she expected it to be brought up. “Why, nothing has-- Oh!” Suddenly, the realization hit her; while Meiling spent her every day outside, the garden had become routine. The lilies had been explained, and already had become commonplace. But for Flandre, who spent her many days inside, it must have been such an alien change.

Without yet answering, the guard pulled a key from her vest, clicking open the lock of the wrought-iron gate and opening it to clear the path between her and the Young Mistress. As tense as the situation between them might have been, seeing such a young girl in distress was making it impossible for Meiling to keep their last encounter in her mind. Maybe it was instinct, but Meiling simply felt compelled to comfort the small vampire.

She kneeled down on one knee, allowing herself to be a bit closer to Flandre’s height and looking at the child’s afflicted face. Her chest welled up in a breathe of air, before she released it in a patient, sympathetic sigh.

“The flowers have been here a little over a week or two.” She explained levelly, watching for any sudden moves. “And the leaves have been changing with the seasons. I-- Well, I don’t know.” She admitted helplessly, her eyebrows raising with her concern. “I know that you haven’t been outside of the mansion since we last spoke.” The incident with the rabbits was quickly glossed over, her face becoming far more concerned as a realization dawned on the guard. When she finally spoke, her voice was weak and airy. “Have you been outside of your room since then…?”

When she heard the roar of Rikako’s entrance, she raised to her full height, turning to face the gate with a face that looked far more resolute than she felt. Shifting her weight, Meiling put herself between the gate and her Young Mistress, and act of protection; though whichever side she was protecting was unknown even to the guard herself.

“Good evening,” She tweeted, acting ignorant of their current situation. “Are you-- Well…” Her mouth down turned when she realized that Rikako’s lessons and Shingyoku’s training were two entirely different occasions, and that somehow she had managed to find herself in a strange conundrum between them and her Mistress. “Are you two both here for training?” Her voice was breathy and awkward, as if she was trying to hide something from the two that had found their way to her post.

From the corner of her eye, she was watching Flandre. Even if she had kept quiet in response to her question, she was hoping to shimmy her way out of her duties to the duo. Right now, with the Young Mistress as it was, it was far more important to focus entirely on giving the child some peace of mind, lest their guests suffer the wrath of a confused, upset, little vampire.

Really, Shingyoku should be better about this. It's not like keeping track of her is that hard after all. Koishi gives a sigh, looking at her sempai with an amused expression. It's not like she dislikes the guardian, quite the opposite, it's just she wishes she kept better track of her charge, in this case, Koishi. She announced she was following the reporter before they left the Bunbunmaru building and Shingy didn't even talk with her! Like she didn't know Koishi existed or was following her! That Shingy might not have even heard Koishi or was even aware of the bicloptic Satori's existence didn't even register in her mind.

Still, she couldn't be angry with him, after all, he brought her to this place, this rather interesting place with its great gardens and huge walls and gothic appearance. She was going to go exploring but who of all people would be there than the purple that pointed a laser at her! The one that may have taken over Gensokyo! Or was trying to! The purple one! Rikako was it? No visible laser this time, but best be cautious, idly remembering that just because her drone might go off doesn't mean that she's been spotted.

A closer look, oh, and who's this? The green colored gate guard! Koishi vaguely remembered her, she wasn't sure from where, but she was positive she's seen Meiling before. Maybe the last time she was here? Was she ever here before? Memories are so hard to disentangle sometimes. Still, she looked interesting and seemed to be hiding someone? Why? Were they scared like Nue was? Or maybe it was an imaginary person. A few moments, sneaking back behind Meiling, nearly running head on into Flandre, stopping just short of revealing herself though the prismatic vampire might get a twinge of closeness, that someone is right near her.

~Her wings are pretty~ working out as she looks at the girl, face put into a wide grin, even as she sits down right near Flandre, examining the girl's wings closely. So many colors, and the way the light shines through them, beautiful. Still, she seems upset and if there's something Koishi doesn't like it's someone being upset. That usually means they're crying and not interesting or fun at all, as she gives the blonde vampire another once over, trying to radiate feelings of joy and ease out of her, both by closing her eyes and straining and subconsciously, her desires translated outward.

Shingyoku was calm, even when faced with Flandre, because she seemed friendly and happy enough. In the average scenario, Shingyoku would just ask to postpone the training for a bit, and perhaps leave. That way, the vampire wouldn't have the chance to have a sudden and destructive mood swing, and perhaps he could get Rikako to go with him and explain her training with Meiling. Perhaps there was something they could learn from each other.

All that planning fell apart in an instant as Shingyoku felt rather than heard some form of static, like an out-of-tune radio. He was instantly familiar with that feeling: Koishi was around here somewhere. Who knew what the satori would do, especially knowing she couldn't be seen by anyone? And letting Meiling and Flandre know there was an invisible guest would be disastrous in the extreme. Fortunately, his body language did not betray any of this, as he replied to Meiling, "I am, Meiling. But could you introduce me to your friend first?" His voice was pleasantly neutral, to avoid offending the vampire.

“…Sis should have told me about the flowers…” Flandre pouted, giving a frown as she was provided with a momentary target for which to redirect her agitation, “Nobody tells me anything anymore!” The young vampire raised her voice slightly, as it seemed she was getting close to another tantrum; she was practically glaring daggers at the plants. Those dangling bell-like blossoms wiggling in the wind seemed to be almost taunting her with their very existence, disrupting her endless routine like that…why she ought to—

--No. That wouldn’t be wise. Remilia would be furious if she did that; the last person she’d want to have to contend with was her sister, especially not after she had broken the window coming out of here as well. However, Remilia should have told her about the changes she was making to the garden. This was her home and thus also her garden as well! If she didn’t know about them, and she wasn’t consulted about these flowers…no, weeds, then they are not supposed to exist. They don’t have her permission to!

Flandre gave pause to her abruptly planned vendetta against innocent flowers when she heard Meiling’s further explanation. It was fall already?! Flandre’s expression to Meiling’s explanation was a mix between shock and amazement.

“Have I? I…I’m not sure…” Flandre answered hesitantly, the previous display of growing fury almost immediately dying down. When was the last time had she been outside? There was the onsen trip, but that was in winter. What was she doing in the spring? Had she done anything in spring? What about summer?!

This realization clearly agitated the young vampire even further. Her mind slowly drifting towards even more questions, trying to come up with reasons why she couldn’t recall anything to do during those seasons. One just doesn’t forget about something like that! Then the only other option is that she was forgotten again, secluded all the way down in the basement for so long her place in the household just vanished into rumors and tall tales…

“…You…All of you didn’t forget about me until now, did you?” Flandre asked Meiling quietly, her voice barely a whisper. Was there fear in the little girl's voice? Almost as if she was afraid to hear the answer...The sudden interjection of the voice from the voice, almost made Flandre jump. The whole place seemed so deathly quiet save for the two mansion residents until now. Flandre quickly stepped behind the gate guard, one hand tugging at her dress. The vampire quickly looked behind her as her wing seemed to have brushed onto or snagged into something around here…it must’ve been one of those weeds, even if they were in the middle of the walkway…

“Meiling, the weeds are getting out of control too. My wings got snagged on something…”

Shingyouku's question was answered with a simple "no". It seemed unlikely that the construct picked the exact same time she did to repay Meiling for some favor he owed her. Tucking the ball under her arm, she took out a small computer while she waited, as the guard was busy with something. When she was addressed she didn't look up from whatever she was typing into it. "No, not this time. I came here to uphold my end of our agreement, payment for your teachings."

She raised her gaze to a spot near the young vampire, her motion trackers having picked up something else that wasn't clearly the distressed child, the youkai guard or the trisexual golem. She shifted her gaze slightly to the young vampire and listened to what she said, based on those words, she was related to Remilia, the rumoured younger sister.

"If I may interject, your name is Flandre Scarlet, correct?" She asked the vampire directly, setting the orb onto the ground. When she was answered, she continued her interjection. "It wasn't one of the lillies that snagged your wing, if my trackers are correct, something else is nearby and out of our perception range. I know of two creatures that are able to do this, however thier abilities do not extend to machines." She began to type onto her computer again, network connection was good, all systems fine, the new 'toy' was ready. "Now, Meiling, the reason I came here was to give the promised payment for your lessons. One of my main goals for my technology was to make life more convenient for others and with the approach of winter this little gift should be adequate." She pressed a button and the ball unfolded, taking the shape of a metal beetle, rather than a spider.

"This drone is called a firefly model. It generates light and heat rather than electricity so it can keep you warm and illuminated whenever it gets cold, dark or both. The drone was looking directly at Meiling as Rikako spoke, for about 10 seconds. The drone then scuttled along the floor towards one of the gate posts and crawled straight up it, latching itself around head level. "As for the extra intruder, according to my readings they should be right..." she pointed at the spot Koishi was sat "there."

Meiling’s face contorted into a scowl, giving Shingyoku a very telling look to her mood. She didn’t want to deal with outsiders right now; keeping track of the Young Mistress was more than Meiling could handle already. Any kind of complications just made the situation all the more dangerous.

“This is my Young Mistress,” She replied professionally, shifting her weight to one leg in order to expose the small blonde behind her. Her arm shifted, shuffling behind the girl to rest a protective and possessive hand on the Flandre’s shoulder. Even if things seemed strange, she wanted Flandre to know that she was there. There was still someone familiar to her there, looking out for her. “She is out to view the gardens this evening, and I am in charge of the tour for tonight.”

Meiling’s voice had a sort of distant professionalism towards Shingyoku; she was hoping desperately that he would catch the hint and back off for the night. That, by extension, also applied to Rikako, but since the scientist was quiet, Meiling was holding back from any kind of rebukes. That, of course, had to be shattered when Rikako went to address the Young Mistress directly. Protecting Flandre was getting harder and harder the more that the outside world tried to reach out to her. In the back of Meiling’s mind, there was a rather biting fear that all this exposure to such a different world would scare the poor girl far more than she could handle.

It was a lot like walking on thin ice. She needed to be careful where she treaded.

“ ‘Something else’?” She asked skeptically, shifting her weight more so that she could look over Flandre for any snags. Strangely enough; Rikako had been right. Flandre’s wings were completely unmolested; and yet she seemed to be sure that something was touching her. Meiling’s frown deepened as Rikako glossed over the intruder; it seemed hardly the time to talk of robots, even ones meant as repayment. Her free arm wrapped around Flandre, pulling her close against Meiling’s legs and all the more distant from the unseen satori. Her eyes never left the spot that Rikako had pointed to. Not once.

“I appreciate it-- really I do.” She hazarded a look at Rikako, and it was clear that Meiling was feeling the stress of the situation, “But for now-- for tonight, I mean-- Well--” She looked down at the mess of blonde that she was holding, and then back to the gate where her guests waited. “It’s not a good night. Thank you, I really do appreciate you two coming by, but…”

I have more important things to take care of, tonight.

The satori's face scrunches at seeing the Purple haired girl, her nemesis. The laser girl. All other sorts of not-very nice adjectives which cross her mind as she backs away a little from Flandre. She's hiding, she might not want to see Koishi. Well, that's fine, Shingy's always fun. Still, she won't let this potential entertainment go without a fight!

There it is, the green clad girl's protecting the one with the pretty wings, this might bear further inspection. Smiling her little smile, Koishi almost starts to lightly bother Meiling before something makes her stop. Shaking her head, she looks, as if confused, a feeling she has, that bothering Flandre and her guardian may not be a good idea. Abandoning her plan as if she never had it she begins to move back to her original target.

A few moments later, she's already glided around to right behind Shingyoku, as if waiting. She's waiting for the Hakurei Guardian to notice her, she's pretty sure that Shingy has, or waiting for Shingy to turn around or even bop her on the head, bouncing on the balls of her feet, putting out a low grade feeling of anticipation and impatience to all involved, not doing so consciously, but doing so all the same.

There was one time, many years back, when an insect youkai beset the humans with swarms of stinging, biting, annoying insects. Thousands of them would fill the air, and while they weren't terribly dangerous, they were quite distracting. Shingyoku learned quickly to ignore their pesky buzzing and stinging.

Ignoring Koishi's vague presence wasn't quite the same, but it used the same skills. He had to not let on that he noticed her, for that would be potentially dangerous. As it was, Rikako knew she was here, if not the exact specifics of her location, but Flandre and Meiling were oblivious, as it should be.

Shifting mental gears, he turned toward Rikako. "Oh, I had a thought. Since Meiling is busy, I figured you and I could go elsewhere and, since you say you've been training with Meiling, I could evaluate your skills. Though our styles are different, they come from the same root. This way, your training doesn't lapse, and Meiling has time to handle more important things."

It had certainly been a long time since Flandre ever felt close to someone before, or even felt protected at all even. Although then again, the young vampire was powerful be able to fend for herself against the outside world, perhaps too well even. However, what of the things her powers couldn’t reach? What of her inner demons that constantly torment her day and night? Great power begets great loneliness as the saying goes…

Flandre was certainly quite surprised by how protective Meiling was to her tonight, it was something that she didn’t seem to get too often from just about any one. The girl latched onto the gate guard’s leg, current state of mind required her to have just a little bit of much needed comfort, of which the gate guard in front of her was willing to provide; she had almost forgot the feeling of hugs…

“Meiling…was I interrupting something? You seem upset…” The younger Scarlet inquired worriedly, looking up at Meiling when she heard it was a ‘bad night’. Was it something she did? Did she catch her at a bad time tonight? Wait…that purple haired girl had said that there was an extra intruder…

“Wait you said something about an intruder?” She glanced around to the place the girl had pointed. Good gods…she’s probably distracting Meiling from her job! She’s going to get in trouble for letting an uninvited guest in…

“Oh dear…”

…The thought of being even more of a burden around the household made her grip onto Meiling all the harder. “I-I’m so sorry! I probably shouldn’t be out here bothering you like this…” she stammered, somehow almost working herself to tears. She glanced back over to where the intruder had been pointed out.

“But don’t worry though, I’ll get rid of that intruder!” she declared, before raising a hand over the area behind her where Koishi would have been, her wings starting to glow one by one as she drew on her powers of destruction…

Wow. The tension in the air was so tight tonight you could probably use it as a seige weapon. It seemed that Meiling wanted to be left alone but... "Well, I understand what you need but if you would allow me to write down the instructions for you to read later, I'll leave right away."

There were a few things she needed to tell Meiling about her new toy after all. As something like this was probably so alien in reality even to a science fiction fan, it may be too confusion when it displayed odd behaviours which were in fact perfectly normal. When the former guardian spoke to her, she shook her free hand at him. "While that may be prudent, I haven't come too far yet as you can suspect, my... condition has made progress slower, we've had to cut a few sessions early as a result." She really needed to keep that magic under control, it was getting harder to hold it back given how stressfull these past few years have been.

She heard a sudden enthusiasm after nervous stammering coming fro the young vampire, seems she was getting excited. "No need for that, Flandre Scarlet. As you can see from this photographic evidence." She turned her computer around to show a bluescale picture of her and Meiling exactly as they were just a couple of seconds ago from the perspective of the firefly. "The intruder is gone. Creatures that rely on stealth tend to flee when they know they're caught."

As for the firefly, there was a very small sounding click as the bot had turned in place and opened up its shell, radiating heat.
