New Activity System Ideas UPDATED 1/12

Postby Fujiwara no Mokou » 30 Dec 2012 02:33

Updated:

Activity will be resuming after New Years, returning to the old system while we continue considering changing systems.

One Possible System, on a monthly basis:

Scans:

Activity for each calendar month will be “scanned” on the first Saturday of the next month. We will require all characters to have at least 4 posts each month on the IC boards as a whole, or a strike will be given. Exceptions can be made for various circumstances, so feel free to talk with the moderators about an appeal if you receive a strike notice.

This is the bare minimum to avoid strikes, but in the interest of keeping threads moving, please try to generally post at least twice in each thread per month. The moderators will periodically talk with players who are posting slowly, though slow or imbalanced posting will not incur automatic strikes. In the absence of weekly computerized scans, the mod team will no longer be asking people to try to adhere to fixed turn orders, so feel free to post in whatever order works, or to skip players who are stalling threads for too long.

Alt Characters:

Alt characters will be treated exactly as mains, with their own separate strike pool and 4-post requirement. The only difference is that hiatus time counts for both characters at once, and that when an alt strikes out the player may elect to sacrifice their main instead if they so desire.

Hiatus Time:

Each player will get 4 weeks of hiatus time every three months, as before. Roughly each 7 days of hiatus that are posted in advance in the Time Off forum will remove 1 post from the month’s quota. PLEASE USE THE TIME OFF FORUM. Just because the scans are not weekly doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give fellow players the courtesy of telling them when you are taking a break. Exceptions can be made for unforeseen circumstances, but please try to avoid retro-active hiatuses.

This system was derived based on several assumptions:
--The current system, with automated scans and a weekly schedule, is too inflexible
--The general pace of PoIR is too slow, and burnout is a major factor in that
--Burnout is largely caused by people being forced to post on a rigid schedule

Please give us feedback and alternate ideas.

New activity system, take 2: a revision to the current weekly system, with two parts.

New stalling system:

Weekly scan like we have now. When a thread comes up stalled, instead of looking at the posting pattern to find who’s up next, we give a strike to the person who has had the longest period without posting. This allows people to more easily post in whatever order they want. People will also be able to say in their posts that they don’t plan to post anymore unless addressed, to signal that they should be skipped until further notice. As usual, if anyone posts in a thread, no one else has to worry in that thread for that week.

New idle system:

We have two possibilities for this. We would like to remove the current idling system, because in practice it only ends up being an arbitrary minimum post count quota. There are two options that we’re considering:

Option 1: A simple requirement that people post at least once, anywhere on the IC boards, every 4 weeks. This ensures that people are actually posting and not just sitting on a character while they wait for their turn, which the current system is supposed to but doesn’t necessarily succeed at. At the same time, it doubles the period from 2 weeks to 4 weeks, which should give people plenty of time to wait for their turn to come up or start a new thread. Passes can be given for special circumstances.

Option 2: A thread-based idle requirement of one post in every thread each month, which would ensure at least one posting “cycle” is completed in a month, regardless of turn order. This that closes the loophole inherent in open posting orders, namely that one could simply lurk a thread while other people post each week.

Re: New Activity System Ideas UPDATED 1/5

We will probably continue with something like the current system, with some changes to fix problems in it.

The current activity system:

We have a weekly scan that checks all the threads in the IC forum for activity. If a thread hasn’t been posted in since the previous scan, the thread is “stalled.” When a thread comes up stalled, we look at the posting order established by the thread’s recent history to find who should have posted next, and that person gets a strike. Furthermore, if players don’t post somewhere in the IC forum for 2 consecutive weeks, they can also get a strike. This is waived if they are in at least two threads with their main character, and at least 1 thread with their alt if they have one. This gives people a way out if it just happens not to be their turn in any of their threads.

Problems with this system:

The stalling system is a bit rigid, encouraging strict posting orders and making it a little more difficult for people to post in whatever order works with the flow. The idling system doesn’t quite accomplish what it’s supposed to, which is make sure that people are actually active with their characters on a regular basis, and in practice just serves as an arbitrary minimum thread quota.

New, revised system we are proposing:

We will have a weekly scan like we have now, except that when a thread comes up stalled, we give a strike to the person who has had the longest period without posting instead of looking at the posting pattern. This allows people to more easily post in whatever order they want. People will also be able to say in their posts that they want to be skipped until a certain other person posts, or that they don’t plan to post anymore in a thread unless addressed by other characters to signal that they should be skipped until further notice. This would remove them from the activity requirement while letting others continue the thread at a steady pace. As usual, if anyone posts in a thread, no one else has to worry about getting a strike for that thread for that week.

Idling will change to a simple requirement that people post at least once every 4 weeks, anywhere on the IC boards. This ensures that people are actually posting and not sitting on a character while they wait for their turn, which the current system is supposed to do but doesn’t necessarily succeed at. At the same time, it doubles the period from 2 to 4 weeks, which should give people plenty of time to wait for their turn to come up in a thread, or to start a new one. Passes can be given for special circumstances.

Advantages to these changes:

--A less rigid posting order, letting people skip or ask to be skipped by others, or to have a fluid, changing post order to fit what makes sense.
--People will be able to pop into threads briefly, then do something in the background without having to continue posting unless interacted with by someone else. Example: one of the prismrivers could drop into a thread and play background music at a party, without having to continue posting if they don’t have anything to react to.
--The idling system actually does what it’s supposed to, and makes sure people are actually posting, while giving them twice as long to do it so that the 2 threads = safe (3 threads = safe for people with alts) loophole shouldn’t be necessary, hopefully preventing people from feeling like they have to open up a thread they may not care about just in case their turn doesn’t come up in their other thread(s).

Announcing that you want to be passed:

If you want to be passed in a thread, please give as much detail as you can in bold at the end of your post. For instance,

<Thread text>

[Passing until Kaguya joins the scene]

If you want to be in the background of a scene but not post regularly, you might say,

<Thread text>

[In the background continuing what I'm doing until addressed]

Having it be at the end and in bold will help it stand out for the moderators to read.
