[Invite only] Remembering the Touch of Death

Postby Yukari Yakumo » 15 May 2012 14:39

Dusk. It is unfair to say that there is a true border between night and day; between the times of sun and shadow an infinite array of colours can be observed, each and every one a turning point that philosophers could argue that, no, this was the true boundary between the two. And they would each be somewhere between wrong and right.

But we digress.

This was a forboding household; rich, haughty, high.

Deathly.

The servant she had stolen away before had been correct; Yukari could feel the smell of death upon this place, drifting through the cherry blossoms and the faded light. Yet, for all the rumors, there was a sense of... peacefulness. Not the violent, spiteful, soul-rending ends that the gap youkai was used to. But still, an end.

And so she carefully eased her way into the household, ghosting through walls, passing by unaware guards and servants, to finally come to her destination - a wing of the household that was well warded - but to keep evil magics within, not without. A solitary bedroom within that wing, with a single person that was the shame of this house.

The house of Saigyouji, of course.

(The acts of this thread take place in the past; this means it's probably hard to have anyone who's not Yuyuko to join in. Ran might be allowed, but even she's got to ask!)

Deathly silence, apart from the whisper-quiet breathing of a small, slender girl wrapped in a pale blue kimono that does nothing to disguise the fact that her skin has never seen the warmth of sunlight.

Someone... no. Something.

Despite attempts to brighten the room, a deep, dank, grim aura oozes from the very floorboards and walls - save for the small island of light lit by candles, which flicker as if struggling to keep burning.

Coming closer...

Hair hushes against the silk of her clothing as her head turns slowly towards the approaching flame.

Violet...

The last time she saw a violet flame...

...it's here...

...what happened, again?

One of the candles, one of many, flickered labouredly in the circle. It wavered, as if a faint gust of air had shifted it. The strange shimmering movement spread past the other candle flames, each swaying one after the other in an invisible wave. The presence, though unmoving, seems to have grown larger, more.. intense.

Another flicker, this time more in time with the others, flowing towards the pale girl for a moment.

Another flicker. A larger disruption now, each faint light wavering as if whatever unearthly presence had taken a step closer to manifesting within the room.

Flicker. Flicker. Flicker. The candlelight bowing down in rippling movement, surging towards her, faster, faster, charging her, lengthening, stretching out under the immense pressure of the thing's aura. No longer just flickers - simply bending in place again and again as it is almost upon her and the candles start to blow out from the closeness-

Leaving just a single, struggling flame. Weakly fighting to stay lit, it returns upright. Barely illuminating. The smoke from the others, floating up, whipping around the opposite corner of the room, focusing on that - purplish? violet-? presence. Coalescing. Was it.. was it outlining a human shap-

The arms that wrapped around the girl's head and neck were clothed in the finest white silk, and their embrace is ever so slightly warm against her skin, sliding under her chin and tousling the pallid hair.

"My, my... what is with this limp hair, this poorly maintained skin? You look absolutely terrible." The voice, calm and almost motherly, came from behind, out of sight, out of the darkness.

"Who are you?"

Said in a word-weary voice, tired and disinterested in anything beyond the fact that it was suddenly rather difficult to read.

A careful observer would note that despite the magnificent gardens of the mansion, there were no floral arrangements, bonsai, or small insects in the room. Not that the girl in the darkness knew much about what was outside.

An infinitesimal pause, as though the... person..? on the other end of those encompassing arms recalculated, shifting expectations and plans from the markedly less frantic response elicited.

The grip adjusted itself, settling into a slightly more comfortable position, though not any less subtly ominous. It pressed against the girl's neck just short of constricting, reaffirming its physical presence - just as the spirit of concentrated presence on the far side of the room pulsed and waned.

"Would you believe this one is but a simple pilgrim who has lost her path on her way to see the famed cherry blossoms and other items of interest in the famed Saigyouji household?" A pause, and the various parts of non-answers and not-quite-falsehoods could almost be heard filtering into place. "No, no... Too problematic having to see that tree today as well... How about a visiting official, here to make sure everything is in order? That seems almost believable, doesn't it?" A light, playful voice, contrasting against the dull, dead drone of the held girl.
"Or perhaps I'm a simple cleaner, someone who cleans up people's little unsightly problems before they can become a mess, ne?"

Another pause. -And a sniff, as if trying to track down an unpleasant smell. The voice had taken on a critical, almost chiding tone.
"Have you been bathing properly, young girl?"

"You're late."

"Have you been bathing properly, young girl?"

"Have you?"

And with that piercingly dull comment, she fell quiet again.

No such onomatopoeia exists for the sound of part annoyance, part amusement that escapes Yukari's lips. -Well, if one were to make one up, it would be a cross between a "Harumph!" and a "Ha!" Yet Yukari's grip - for that was the person who held this small girl's neck - loosened ever so slightly, the weight of the taller youkai pressing down slightly as she leans in.

"Well, aren't you the cheerful one? A perfectly dramatic entrance, and barely a comment out of you from it. Most people would be rather curious if someone were to pop up in their room unannounced.. you barely seem to care at all." The gap youkai paused, catching her breath. Struggled to draw another one.
"So, we have a mystery girl locked up in a room covered in seals, where in the house of Saigyouji it's rumoured there exists a great tragedy, a living weapon, a terrible.. creature.. One might wonder which of those are.. you.."

There was no killing intent. Nothing at all to read in the atmosphere. Yet, the smell was offputting - not precisely of anything discernable - not anything discernable at all, as if the things that caused decay and breakdown themselves had died - a smell of absolutely nothing. And as the - purple? presence in the corner wavered and shrank just as the candles had done before, Yukari only now started to understand the situation, only now started to understand her grave error.

So noisy...

"...not for much longer..." she murmured.

An insect would have survived about a split second in physical contact with the girl. A cat or dog, perhaps up to one minute. Most people lasted several minutes at most before falling unconscious - although this last group tended to avoid her presence entirely if possible. The servants had to take shifts just to wash her hair, which was done in short rotations, and they always looked pale and short of breath for several days afterwards. Eventually she'd just learned to do it herself.

"Your skin is cold."

She took the opportunity to reignite some of the candles as the mysterious intruder's strength leaked away.

There was something - something terrible happening, that made things hard to understand. A sense of quiet, lifeless peacefulness, silent as the grave.

Yes, grave. Something about that word. Something that should be alarming. Not to make one rest harder against such a danger, letting one's arms fall limply away from her neck, her head resting on one shoulder, golden hair just showing past.
"It... feels like you are very warm, for some reason.." Perhaps in answer, perhaps in a daze. Yukari Yakumo continued to wither in this presence of unmourned death, fading as fast as the presence opposite.

This girl was death. Quiet, peaceful, restful death, but still, death.

"I... appear.. to have made.. a fatal..missstak-*"

There was barely even a death rattle as Yukari fell silent. Fell away, arms slipping away from her, backwards, barely even a soft thump against the carpet as the spirit on the other side of the room vanished, dropping away, as if never existing.

One more casualty, perhaps.

-Yet, when Yuyuko were to turn around, there was no body to be found. No displaced areas of the carpet, of the mystery intruder who had fallen so easily.

"..."

She simply tossed her hair back over her shoulder - now infused with a blend of fragrances that she didn't and couldn't care to name - and returned to what she was doing before the unrequited distraction.

That is to say, staring at nothing of consequence.

Neither owner nor victim of the lethally supernatural ability understood really understood how it worked or what it was truly capable of. The latter only knew that it ended with death via proximity. The former knew somewhat more - that it was not something she could consciously control, and that she was the one responsible for the cloud of forcefully disembodied spirits suffusing the room.

Including, but not limited to, the spirits of flowers, crickets, songbirds, spiders, snakes, and one ex-servant of the Saigyouji mansion.

As well as the girl's mother. Oh, how she doted on her only daughter from beyond the mortal plane.

The girl had want of little beyond food and drink to sustain her; she barely spoke, smiled less, and never laughed at all.

Quiet.

An unsettled quiet, after the dear departed guest. Hesitant, drawing long, as if all this unpleasantness were to behind everyone, to be forgotten.

It was unbroken for almost an hour.

Two hours.

And nearly another half-hour without interruption. But it was not to last, even with the young girl's motionless lack of action, keeping still without need or desire to alter the situation.

A familiar voice. The one from before. This time before her, back to its original vibrant and strong one.

"Well. That was... unpleasant. And rather rude too, if you meant to do that..." This time, Yuyuko was able to see who her mysterious guest was.

Lying on her front almost carelessly atop her - her-! bed. Resting on one white-gloved arm, dressed in nightgown of purple form and dark trim. Golden tresses of hair flicked back.

"But, of course... you didn't... not intentionally, did you?" Narrowed yellow eyes gaze over the girl's form, taking in her measure, a guess at what was causing this ability. Yukari Yakumo, in the flesh again, though the scion of Saigyouji was not to know that.
"Well. It'd have been terrible if I'd nearly been killed on purpose, wouldn't it. It'd be the talk of the country."

"Better than being killed by accident."

Apparently the unsolicited company had returned. No matter.

Sooner or later, she would either lose interest in attempting to make conversation or literally die trying; the combination of flat responses and mortal risk involved in obtaining these meant that most lost interest very, very quickly.

It had occured to the girl that neither of the above might happen, but she wasn't convinced.

"So." So indeed.

The intruder's wandering eyes had captured the view of the ill-lit room, smoky and dark and without adornment or entertainment. No way out, not even a window to break the monotony of silence and death.

And the girl had just sat there, after feeling someone fall as if dead, for a solid two hours. Without natural light. Without books, or knowledge, or even paper and ink to express herself. Alone, with just the hum of.. spirits.. that she was unable to understand or even perhaps perceive.

Sealed away. Because of something she couldn't control, because they feared her. Just like someone else dear to Yukari.

"So." she repeats, twisting over the bed to stand and stride across the room, this time inspecting the smaller girl from all around as she circles her. "I came here to see what kind of dark, disturbing creature that kills without remorse or mercy without hesitation, and it looks like all that's here is a young girl who can't control herself. How disappointing."

"You should have known better."

You should be kinder to your guest.

Guest?

Guest.

Why?

You can't sit alone in the dark forever.

I'm not alone.

Of course not, that golden-haired one is still here.

She doesn't count.

She counts. I've only seen purple twice before. Now stop being so dreary, you remind me of your father.

A soft sigh, and then silence once again.

"Well, perhaps. But you know, one can't really know better unless they are told, or try something for themselves, can they?"

There was a strange susurrus in the air, a hum of ghostly whispers that only those properly attuned with such things could hear. Yukari seemed to take no note of it, turning away from the quiet girl in the dim room, now once again focusing on a wall.

"Not that that is something of much interest to you, I'm sure. After all, you do seem quite content here, in this lightless room, hiding from away from any sense of desire or duty or curiosity or even fear or any emotion at all. I mean, how could you? Perfectly reasonable for someone trapped in a room with no escape.

Tapping once. Tapping twice on the wall. Outlining a shape of a large rectangle on the plain, undecorated area.

And then she pushed outwards, and the wall came apart at a seam undiscovered, a hidden french door leading to- blindingly bright light.

"It's quite a shame, I guess. But, well, since you're not really interested in anything, I guess it doesn't really matter." The youkai of gaps strode out through the new opening, a silhouette of darkness outlined by the incandescent glow. The doors slam shut behind, leaving just a hint of arid freshness amidst the stagnant air.

Then, nothing.

For about a minute, at least. Before a small hatch opened up again, Yukari poking her head through the brilliant shining opening as if through an window, again, that wash of air from before entering the room.

"Say... I wonder. Would you like to try? Seeing the world beyond these four walls, that is?"
