The river that flows down the Youkai Mountain drains into this lake. The poor visibility over the lake and the surrounding forests makes it appear to be very large, although one can easily walk around it. It is inhabited by behemothic fish.

Located on a ridge near the lake is the Scarlet Devil Mansion. A grand building of European styling, with few windows, an extensive basement, and an interior warped and enlarged through magical means. The clock tower houses a turret clock that only tolls at night.

Also nearby is the former Prismriver mansion. Once the home of the aristocratic Prismriver family, it now lies ruined and forgotten save by the three poltergeist sisters that remain.

The Misty Lake certainly lives up to its name, with the air being cool and saturated with mist even in the middle of the day. There is a spooky, almost mystical feel in its atmosphere, one that is somehow not ruined by Futo slowly - but loudly - chewing her unofficial consolation prize from the last fight, some nuts and candies given by Shizuha herself.

"Most palatable," she mumbles to herself, knowing that she can't expect the same kind attitude from her next opponent. From what she heard, she's a youkai who comes straight out of hell itself: a kasha, a fiery cat monster that steals corpses for whatever insidious purposes she has with their souls. An opponent that sounds terrifying, if for nothing but her similarity to the Crown Prince's teacher and their most suspicious acquaintance, that wicked hermit... If their mutual hobby and disrespect for the sanctity of the dead are any indication, she's definitely up against a rather unsavory and vile foe.

That being said, she hasn't noticed any signs of her yet. As Futo reaches into her satchel to take another piece of candy, standing astride her small vessel, she takes a look around. The water seems quiet enough, and while she's close enough to the lake's edge, she hasn't seen any significant movement through the layer of mist. There's probably some birds and small animals around, and fairies - she has to shoot down a couple just to get her boat floating on the lake, those pesky little spirits - but with all the trees and bushes in the way, she cannot be completely sure. The forest by the shore was a pleasant enough place when she went through it on her way here, but it now seems darker and denser when she looks at it from the distance.

Futo shakes her head and finishes the last bit of her snack, folding the satchel back and putting it aside. Perhaps it's just her being paranoid. It's not as if she has a problem waiting here in the open - if she's going to fight, she wants to face her opponent face-to-face, and the closer she is to the shore, the faster she can meet this terrible enemy. There's also the fact that there's a vampire nest in the island in the middle of the lake (so the villagers tell her), so it's probably not a good idea to sail too far in...

“Of all the places above an’ under the earth to fight, we have to fight in the ‘Hell of Perpetually Miserable Weather and Freezin’ Water.’” The kasha lamented, flicking her coal black ears to dislodge some of the water that was matting down the fur and weighing down her braids. “Nyaa-- It’ll be hell if any of this gets in my ears.” The twin-tailed cat’s ears pricked up at the sound of Futo’s vessel on the water and... what was this.. was she eating. ‘Well at least all the noise is making easier to chase her down, even in the mists.’ Orin fell forward to the ground sliding into her feline form. She stretched her legs, still a bit sore from her fight with the two-horned terror. She tried in vain to shake the water from her paws, hissing in displeasure.

‘I hate the water.’

The twin-tailed cat’s ears flattened against her head as she watched the shikaisen, stealthily stalking Futo from long grass along the shoreline. ‘Ya may hate the water, but the flesh of an immortal is a rare delicacy, Sis. An' there's still the tournament.’ The hellcat circled around the shore in quiet patience. Just a little longer.

The toaist’s loud chewing was answered by sibilant whispers from the center of the lake. Several large points of light illuminated the billowing folds of mist like spectral lanterns hanging upon the the upon the white shroud. Though the hazy veil of mist made it impossible to identify them with any certainty. No doubt a few of the lake fairies were curious and had come to see the intruder that had earlier chased away their kin. The lights moved closer, silently gamboling through the fog in erratic patterns that brought them ever closer to Futo. The clouds about them roiled as they drew closer, the surface of the air rippling and distorting with a bright blue light. It was almost as if the mists were boiling... but what sort of lake fairy would..

There was no time to devote to the further contemplation of this mystery as three skulls wreathed in azure fire burst through the fog. The cursed spirits shattered the serenity of the lake with their strangled screams as they dove towards the shikaisen, the hazy clouds boiled away it their wake. The spirits attack from the center of the lake, gnashing and clattering their teeth as they bit at Futo, driving her towards the shore where the kasha lay in ambush. 'Nyaaahaa, sounds like the prey is afoot... or aboat... about? Ah what the hell, just looks sharp Sis.'

Futo almost leaped out of her boat when she heard the unholy screeches of the evil spirits. She knew there was something suspicious about those floating lights! "Argh! B-back! Back, foul uncarnates!" Her long sleeves billow as she swings her arm frantically in an attempt to keep the biting skulls at bay. They might not be particularly dangerous to her, but the girl is quite spooked by their sudden appearance that she only spins around and flails about on her boat for some time, adding her own shouts to the spirits' already loud screams.

She finally realizes that she can do so much more than swatting them off, though. Fighting fire with fire, she ignites the air with flaming sparks, burning briefly in order to distract the spirits away from her. Although it will do much good for her if they are actually hurt by the attack, Futo is neither calm nor prepared enough to unleash an accurate and prolonged attack. The shikaisen's immediate surroundings are thus filled with frantic bursts of fire, crackling as they start up and die just as quickly in an indiscernible pattern while she slowly moves away from them.

Perhaps it's quite obvious to an outside observer that she's being led to an ambush, but Futo is too busy to fend off her eerie assailants to notice. The shore seems very much like the logical place to escape away to, and determined to create a distance between her and the spirits' clamping bites, she starts to sail off in that direction even as she continues to wave and point her hands at the spirits, guiding her chaotic fireworks display to keep them at bay.

Eventually, with the prow of her boat finally hitting the sands, Futo keeps her back against the shore as she starts to think up her next move against the spirits, unwittingly leaving herself open to an attack from behind...

With her coal-black ears pinned completely back, Orin watched from the shore as the the Crown Prince’s retainer lit up the sky with uncoordinated bursts of fire that looked more like the decorative bursts of fire one might see above a festival or celebration at the human village rather than any sort of proper defense. The vile spirits continued their assault, harassing the the shikaisen and diverting her attention away from the lurking kasha. Orin stealthily positioned herself to ambush the unwary Mononobe.‘All Sis, this is all too easy. I could just reach out an’ maul her somethin’ fierce. Perhaps immortals aren’t all they’re cracked up to be.. she didn’t even bother to look... ‘course after this she’lI be more on her guard. I just hafta keep her off balance, and away from the damn water.’

Futo met with some success as one of her volleys of flame caught the underside of one of the diving cursed spirits. The skull splintered with a raspy shriek, the fragments burning to ash as the spectre's azure flame flared out of existence. Hearing its cry, Orin instinctively raised her head above the grass and tilted her ears forward. Had Futo taken a split second to look behind her, she may have caught sight of the twin-tailed hellcat before the feline disappeared back into the brush. ‘I swear, those damn deaders are such a useless lot...well, that just leaves more fun for me. Let’s go introduce ourselves, Sis.’

Orin waited for just the right instance to spring her ambush. Despite their dull aches from the last fight, the muscles in her legs and hindquarters tensed like overwound springs as she readied herself for an explosive burst of speed. She had all of a cat’s inherent, almost supernatural agility bolstered by the the speed and strength of youkai. ‘I probably shouldn’t give her any warning, but what the Hell.’ The small black and red hellcat burst from her low crouch with a piercing cry. The shrill mew turned to a tittering laugh as she shifted in mid-air, shedding her feline form in one fluid movement that closed the distance between her and Futo. She used the shift in her mass to help control her speed, slowing her just enough so she could perfectly land her strike.

The immortal could feel the sting of the kasha’s claws as Orin rent through the back of Futo’s garment with a graceful upward sweep of her right hand. Her touch left four blossoming red stripes from hip to shoulder. The wounds were shallow scrapes, more of a playful swipe than and actual attempt to tear Futo in half. The hellcat landed behind and to the left of Futo. Orin stood with her her right hand up, the other gathering the side of her skirt as she curtsied. She flexed her bloodstained claws, curving her fingers in such a way to make a show of them. “My name is Orin... ‘tis a pleasure to meet ya sis.” She brought the tip of her finger to her lips, tasting the drop of blood underneath her claw. “A real pleasure.”

Any sense of satisfaction felt by Futo from destroying the evil spirit was quickly quashed when she heard that strange meow. She turned her head toward the sound in reflex, only to be faced with a shapeshifting, cat-like blur - and acquiring a sharp pain on her back for her effort.

"Agh...!" Too late to defend herself, she ceases the fire from her hands and starts to reach behind in a panicked manner, although one sight at Orin confirms that she has indeed been wounded. What did she do that she has to face such a terrible enemy? The spirits are already quite disquieting in their own right, but now she has to go against the youkai who must be pulling their strings, too; and appearance aside, it also seems that she's more cat than girl, what with the way she playfully carries out her cruel acts...

"...I-I am Mononobe no Futo!" Out of the force of habit, she starts to bow to her in response to her curtsy, although the realization that the gesture might be a mockery successfully snaps the courtier's back straight up. There's no need to embarass herself any further! "And... And I shall vanquish thee, spawn of the underworld!" Futo tries to appear unperturbed by the blood on the kasha's claw and her bestial treatment of it, but she can't hide her stutter even as she points a defiant finger at her.

It's a viable tactic to unsettle your opponent and strike fear in her heart, and someone as reactive and easy to incite as Futo might look like the perfect target for such strategy. However, given her lack of restraint and sense of scale, the danger of doing so soon becomes apparent.

In a snap moment, the shikaisen is transformed into an orb of light.

Or so it might seem, but with a closer look, one can still glimpse the figures of Futo and her boat behind the glow, and notice that there isn't a single source of light at all - rather, it's gleaming from many, many points around the sphere at once. Futo has surrounded herself in a multi-layered orb of arrows, magic brimming from their heads. From inside out, the arrows launched themselves forward, covering all directions and looking almost like a slow explosion. Rather than trying to hit the kasha, it almost looks as if Futo's trying to fill the air with arrows instead; through the mist, the shining arrows be seen spreading outward as they sail through the air.

Perhaps it's out of her fit of panic and over-zealousness, but some of her arrows are even hitting one another, their heads piercing through the tails of the ones in front of them, chaining them together.

Now to twist the knife a little. The hellcat blinked her lovely carmine eyes and placed her hand on her chest with in a perfect affectation of hurt. “Vanquish me? Spawn of the underworld.. oh, sis... I’m crushed. Why’d you ever want to do somethin’ like that? I perform a very important duty, y’know, kasha are--”

The sudden explosion of magic was more than the kasha was expecting, enough to stop her mid-sentence. Orin's large black ears flatten back against her head and her ruby red eyes widen as she discerns the true nature of the attack.‘Oh Sis...blessed arrows, and too many of ‘em to count.' She had deliberately provoked the shikaisen and now it looked like she was going to get just what she’d asked for. ‘It’s all part of the plan, all ya hafta do is get her to keep burning’ up her strength an’ exhaust herself. The trick is not to wind up looking like a pincushion while doin’ so.’ Rin had foregone a proper ambush as part of a larger gambit. If she could lure Futo into overextending herself, the immortal’s fatigue would leave her vulnerable.

Orin remained still for a precious split second more to determine the likely trajectories of incoming volley. Fortunately for the kasha, it didn’t seem like Futo was making any effort to concentrate her attack... the arrows were even striking each other! ‘That could be a bit tricky. I wonder what she’s plannin’ other than trying to blot out the sun.’ The dark green clad girl shifts from human to feline once more with a pouncing leap. Orin wove through the hail of arrows, darting ahead of them as they riddled the ground just a step behind her twin blazing tails.

With a graceful bound the hellcat shifted back to her human form, landing on the edge of her cart as to catapult it into the air and upend its grim cargo. The usual creaks and groans Orin was accustomed to were drowned out by the rapid report of the iron arrow heads lodging in the undercarriage of her cart. The stained linen shroud that covered the cart billowed like a sail in the slight wind. The shroud hide the kasha from direct sight, but Futo could still discern the rough shape of a figure on the other side of the veil.

The funeral shroud may have divided the living from the dead, but it proved to be a poor barrier to the immortal’s volley of arrows. The figure behind the shroud shuddered violently with a mewling cry of pain as several of the missiles found their marks. The scream fell silent as more of the mystically fortified projectiles sank into their target. Each of the dozen arrow strikes causes her to spasm violently and with one disturbing contortion of her arm the shroud was torn away. What greets the immortal human’s eyes is not the sight of a skewered hellcat, but a pale, arrow-ridden corpse. Its limbs twist at awkward angles as it twists about like a grotesque marionette.

The hellcat rose to her feet well behind the cover of her unliving shield as the corpse pursued Futo with a ghastly vigor. A wreath of dull red flame blossomed above her outstretched hand, growing in diameter as it revolved, flaring brighter as it spun faster and faster into a great wheel of red fire. With a graceful sweep of her arm the hellcat loosed her own volley at Futo, choosing to shoot through her own minion to partially mask her attack.

Although Futo continued to glare through her own furious barrage, glimpsing the fleeting shapeshifter's figure before her, she was paradoxically only paying little attention to what Orin did. Since she was shooting in all directions, there was no need for her to know where her opponent was; rather, she only had to keep the arrows firing and flying through the sky, and her victory would be nothing but an eventual certainty. The shikaisen's pointed stare was only the natural result of her desire to see her arrows striking their target, purifying the infernal creature and whatever evil influence she brings with her.

Perhaps such zeal was too presumptive of her, but that strong sense of purpose encouraged the girl and carried her projectiles forward.

It is still very surprising, though, to hear that pained, bloodcurdling scream when she actually manages to land a hit - and another, and then several more, all in quick succession. Futo had absently noticed the kasha as she produced her grim-looking shroud and believed from the first moment that it was no match against the magic of her blessed arrows. Now that she's faced with such a resounding success, though, even the stubborn immortal feels the need to indulge her curiosity cease firing for a moment, just to take a better look at her work.

A moment soon grows a bit longer than that. Futo can only afford to let out a quiet gasp at the sight of the thing that she has actually hit: a twisted, mangled corpse, just before it lunges at her. Too astonished and horrified to move, the shikaisen instinctively raises her hands to clutch at the undead's wrists just when it is already too close for comfort. "P-pernicious ratsbane...!" Futo shouts at Orin through the undead's own growls, her wide sleeves falling to her elbows as her hands shake and tremble, unable to put a complete stop to its superior strength. "What... what filthy, underhanded plot is this?!"

The reactive girl should be terrified out of her wits, but the sudden, stray thought of how unkept and ill-mannered this creature is, even with its grimy nails clawing and grasping a few inches away from her eyes and slowly getting closer, somehow keeps her from succumbing to fear and panic. She can at least name a zombie with better look and attitude than this one, Futo thought at the back of her mind, even if she also might not be all there in her head.

A flash of inspiration immediately follows from that thought, and the shikaisen quickly acts on it. Clenching her teeth, she releases her hands while moving her head to the side at the same time to avoid the stumbling undead. Her cheek may be grazed by the monster's nail, but it is a much better fate than having her entire face torn out - and more importantly, the corpse has lost its balance for a short but crucial moment.

Before its face, Futo has raised one open palm, where a clay dish quickly materializes, complete with clear, glistening liquid on it.

"QUENCH THINE THIRST, DEMOOOON!" Smashing the plate against its face, the sake on the dish explodes outward from Futo's palm, blasting the corpse's head in a burst of liquor. The now-dead undead soon slumps over, but Futo sees that her problem has just only begun; over the corpse's shoulder, she can see the rim of Orin's fire wheel is coming close to her, and even the searing heat is all but palpable at this point.

Rather than running away, Futo speeds up her boat toward the wall of fire before turning to the side at the last moment, dipping the side of the hull into the lake to push against the water and create a wave against the fire. Perhaps the kasha's fire is magical and won't so easily be extinguished, but as long as she can do something to keep it from spreading further, the shikaisen decides to take the chance. With her vessel, she continues to move around the ring, creating a bigger circle around it while splashing against it at the same time.

[[I blame my bout of pyromaniacism on Futo being a bad influence. A good bad influence. :3]]

The wreath of flame had begun to splinter in the wake of the Futo’s defensive maneuver. It was violently shedding small gouts of flame in a fragmented spiral as its impact with the water cause the wheel of flame to slow and wobble. It clipped the surface of the water, disintegrating as it tumbled along. Burning cinders streaked across the sky and the surface of the lake, hissing as they were extinguished in the water. Orin watched the immortal struggle against the undead with no small amount of personal satisfaction... though it seemed the immortal’s resolve was better tempered than the hellcat had first guessed. “I don’ think he was thirsty, sis. Guess ya’ve seen your fill of walkin’ corpses though... how ‘bout some new friends?” Small wisps of blue flame blossomed in the air about the kasha as more of her beloved spirits manifested.

The dark green folds of the kasha’s skirt rolled about her as she made a graceful turn. A sea of pale green fire kindled in the wake of the cursed spirits that chased after her outstretched hand. The roiling waves of flame were a cruel mockery of the shikaisen’s defensive gambit. Bursts of eldritch fires began to revolve about Orin, tumbling together in a massive circle of fire centered on the kasha. The hellcat twirled again, the flames about her ebbing briefly only to surge higher. The color of the flame shifting to blue as they intensified, consuming all of the surrounding air and boiling away the cooling mists.

Thrice did the kasha spin, ending her third twirl by rising to her full height and crossing both her wrists above her head. The spirits danced about like scintillating stars of blue and green and the sea of flames darkened to a dark azure. It seemed there was scarcely enough air for a single searing lungful between the crushing malice of the onryou and the riotous blue flames.... which.. oddly seemed to be faltering, starved for air after having so gluttonously devoured every last morsel of it.

“As for me... I’m absolutely parched.”

Orin bowed as she flung her arms out to her sides in sweeping strokes. The dull roar of flame turned to a sharp whining noise like the wailing gasp of a dying soul. The halo of flame collapsed fully in on itself before bursting outwards into a massive backdraft that sent sparks and brands of flame radiating in all directions in dense spirals of danmaku. The remainder of Futo’s arrows were flash incinerated, the ashen remains still tumbling in the air until the force of the explosion scattered them to dust.

The concussive force of the explosion blew back the wall of water and set the once calm surface of the lake into rolling waves. The blast of sudden heat had boiled the remaining mists away. As fearsome as it seemed, Futo could take some comfort that it was not a focused attack and the circular patterns of flames created quickly shifting channels of relative safety as the burning embers spread. There was still quite some hazard to navigating between two rotating walls of flame.

All about the pair of combatants, more smalls pin-pricks of azure light filled the air, burning like a sapphire stars hung in a desolate sky. More cursed spirits were answering the kasha’s call.

As much as Futo tried to maintain her obstinate effort in keeping up with Orin's flames, she finally understood that her effort is for naught at that small window of time when the fire suddenly receded. "What--" She gasped and raised her arms automatically, realizing at some unconscious level that something big is coming her way.

Obviously, that is not enough to prevent her from being thrown by her boat when the blast arrives, rocking it violently through the waves. The shikaisen twirls her arms around in mid-air to push herself back to an upright position and manages to float above the lake's waters - and gapes in awe and terror when she sees the full extent of the kasha's attack. With two walls of flames quickly approaching and evil apparitions slowly filling the air, she needs to quickly respond before she's consumed by the unholy conflagration.

"I shall not be bested by such profanity...!" The silver-haired girl leaps back toward her divine vessel just in time for the first of the spirits to stray toward her path. Kicking down at the deck, she causes the boat to suddenly rise up as a makeshift shield before spinning around with it to knock her foes out of the way - and leaving something in the water as she lands back on the water, sailing forward.

It is the statue of a monk clad in Buddhist garb, his face serene as he holds up a plate to ask for alms. Such a holy figure could conceivably be a powerful ward against evil spirits, but with Futo's hurried work and the obvious half-hearted effort she put in her magic to shape up the statue, it is unlikely to provide anything beyond a sense of calm and spiritual contemplation to the most devout follower of that faith.

Such things are quite unachievable for the Taoist, and even more so, unnecessary in a danmaku battle with one of the worst forces of the underworld. However, Futo doesn't seem to care; already she is crafting more and more of similar religious statues as she weaves her way through the spirits and the fiery wall, wood growing and shaping up in her hands as she tries to ignore her singed sleeves and the horrendous bites by the spirits. With her speed, she should be able to at least narrowly avoid all of the hazards between her and the hellish cat, but the task becomes even harder as she tries to concentrate on getting the basic details of her sculpting right.

"The one who hath the last laugh shall laugh the most loud, youkai!" Futo shouts as she continues to sail toward the kasha, creating a circling trail of statues on her way.

Contemplation. Serenity. Detachment. For a creature of pure malice and material attachment, the very notion of transcendence weakened the cores of their accursed existence. Futo’s ramshackle icons gave the encroaching spirits pause before they fled skittering in widely meandering paths avoiding the statues. The rasping cackles and dissonant clamor of the dead became an slightly less disturbing chorus of mewling, confused cries. The row of humble icons completely confounded the kasha’s attempts to constrain the shikaisen’s movements. Orin’s large feline ears tilted to the sounds of their strained voices. “An’ just what has gotten into the lot of ya, you damn deaders.” It didn’t take long for the kasha to catch sight of one of the statues, her own blue flames faltering for just an instant. “Oh the whole lot of ya truly are useless.”

The wards held back the cursed dead, keeping the gaping hellmouth of spirits and flame from closing upon the crown prince’s retainer, but it could only hold the spirits for so long. The potency of the icons began to fail along with their craftsmanship, the wailing cries of the dead turning to hisses of seething rage and roaring contempt for the living. Their immedicable malevolence, further spurred by the shadow of an impossible hope, drove them to lash out. They were biting and gnashing with a ferocity born from a berserk desperation, and the closer Futo came to Orin, the greater the intensity of their assaults became. The spirits twisted protectively about their mistress, but their fury drove them beyond a coordinated defense. If truly daring, or foolishly mad, Futo could use the small respites between the brutal onslaughts of the onryou to slide between the teeth of the hellcat’s trap.

The wheels of flame that circled her continued to shed fiery bullets in spirals of azure flame. The firestorm about the kasha had scorched every last green thing around her, turning the battlefield into blackened scar of land that reminded Orin of the charred paradise of the Hell of Blazing Fires. The cooling mists at the lake’s edge had been blown back, and the plant life had all withered to dust under the heat of the eldritch flames. Orin had no intention of relenting, but she had to do something about those damn symbols.

Thrak’at burzum ishi...”

It was impossible to tell whether it was from the ash and smoke or something more sinister, but the sky darkened and the flames about the kasha rose with a deafening roar as she spoke.

“Mord’at... burzum ishi.”

The ring of spirits and flame around the kasha yawled in its revolution about her and followed the forward motion of her arm. The sweeping gesture sent the tightly revolving band of the spirits spiraling towards the approaching Futo, but the shot was wide to the immortal’s left, instead traveling in an arc that collided with many of the crude facsimiles. It was impossible to destroy all of them, but Orin was content to destroy as many as she could before invoking her spellcard. She pulled the black card emblazoned with red markings and the spiral depicting several cursed spirits. She could feel the swelling tide of malice about her. She would have to wait just a second more.

You shouldn’t touch me sis... your soul’ll break an’ then there won’t be anything left of you.” she replied to with a contemptuous lilt.

For her part, Futo seems to be consumed by her own desire for battle; ignoring the fact that her idols have all but lost their efficacy in keeping Orin's evil spirits away, the hermit continues to futilely tap into the reserves of her power to bring forth the wooden element she requires to sculpt her statues, which by now have been reduced to the barest humanoid form with their plates. It's as if she has never realized that she needs to slow down and rethink her strategy. Instead, she keeps sailing at full speed ahead - only when the onryou's fiery skulls and their soul-rending screech have grown too numerous on her path does she reduce her speed, dropping the half-finished statue to materialize a bow and an arrow in her hand.

"Move aside! Move aside!" Futo shouts as she shoots her divine arrow at the screaming spirits, a single light in the midst of the damned souls. It costs her several painful bites all over her body, but eventually she manages to find the rhythm that allows her to cross through. Her hands switch between the statue and her bow as she alternately moves and holds her ground, causing her boat to sail as if it's breathing irregularly at the same time. Forward, stop... forward, stop... She tries to keep her mind away from all the insignificant - if admittedly dangerous - minions and focuses instead on their leader, the kasha who's responsible for transforming the tranquil lake into the infernal chaos that's raging all over them.

Perhaps that's what allows her to keep moving forward and finally emerge right before the kasha, despite looking bloodied and battered beyond belief, and she only flinches a bit when Orin casts her dark spell and aims it behind her. "Ah... hahaha." Looking back at the destroyed statues behind her, a small chuckle unconsciously escapes on Futo's lips, despite the fact that Orin has just used a very dark and ominous magic to destroy many of her handwork - not just because she will probably ruin her own statues in her next attacks, but because she has finally found someone who could stand Buddhist statues even less than her.

"What a pity that thou art a youkai from the hell beneath," Futo mumbles, although with a wave of her sleeve and tattered outer robe, her smile is already gone once more.

The shikaisen notices that Orin has held a spellcard in her hand, and although her teasing threat causes her to stop in her tracks for a moment, she still extends her arm toward her while pulling her own card of raging flames. "I need not touch thee myself, kasha!" A gust of wind can suddenly be felt as the air around the feline youkai begins to swirl. "Not when I possess in me the magnificent power of! Feng!" What starts out as a refreshing breeze in the increasingly oppressive heat quickly grows visible to the naked eye, forming a cage of razor-sharp gales around Orin - and slowly flowing downward, forcing her to fly downward if she does not wish to cut herself.

From the surface of the lake, Futo has launched her boat on an upward slope to meet her opponent, ready to ram against her from below and splashing a surging wave from the lake against her. "SHUIIIII!"

The shikaisen’s taoist magic had entered into a resonance with the kasha’s as the crushing energies of wind feeding the explosive flames. The confluence of flame and wind over the cool misty water created prolonged updrafts of scorching air that set the heavens in motion in broad rotation centered upon the pair. What had started as a small wheel of flame turning about the kasha had turned to a cyclonic firestorm that blackened the sky with heavy clouds of ash and cinder. In the midst of this churning furnace of smoke and flame were the hermit and the kasha, locked in a combat that strained at the boundaries of the Spellcard rules.

The kasha’s carmine eyes widened with keen interest, her large feline ears pricking forward despite the roar of the wind. The storm caused her twin plaits and bows to furiously flap behind her like twin flags of red and black. The kasha’s laughter could barely be heard above the roar of the winds.“Nyaaahaahaha. Oh now this is interestin'... damn interesting... Chargin’ straight into the mouth of hell with your little dolls. You’ll have plenty of time to meditate upon your mistake in the depths of Old Hell.”

Now there were two things that happened that the hellcat did not intend. The first of which was that the howling gales of wind snatched the spellcard from the kasha’s claws. This caused Orin no end of consternation as she desperately clawed after the card as it tumbled through the air, fluttering just out of her grasp. Futo’s net drew tighter as the vicious winds buffeted the kasha downwards as one gust of the razor-edged wind bled into another. Literally bled. Or at the very least it cause the hellcat to bleed. Orin flinched, holding her hands in front of her face, the wind raking across them. She scrambled through the air just long enough to snag the spellcard in her paws before diving downwards to escape the scouring winds.

She hadn’t been expecting the winds to be so strong and it was becoming more difficult to maintain the rampart of azure flame between Futo and herself as the great wheel of hellfire melded into the scathing winds and burned beyond even her control. The blistering tempest spread the ring of flames in a broad wreath around them, and parted the veil that barred the immortal from the hellcart. Orin’s glowing red eyes remained wide, but her mocking smile had been replace by a look of terror as she became aware of the second unfortunate turn of events she never had intended.

The immortal had woven her way through the gnashing, screaming spirits. ‘She’s not...stopping...they aren’t holding her back... Sis... she’s right there... an’ she’s gonna...' The kasha was as silent as the grave as the as the surge of water cascaded down upon her. The blazing cat could not have been in a worse place. Her aerial maneuver recovering her spellcard has left her further out from the shore and too close to the surface of the water. And now she was under the bow of the immortal’s vessel as it hurtled through the air like a missile. She tried desperately to push up against the vessel, but it’s full weight came crashing down on her, knocking her down into the depths of the Misty Lake. The screeching spirits fell silent and paused in their assaults to turn the full focus of their attentions to the glassy black patch of water that had just swallowed their mistress.

............
.......
...

Their whimpering noises where left unanswered by the dark abyss of the water until a shambling mass of incomplete skeletal remains broke the surface. The individual forms tumbled and clambered over each other only to collapse back into the decrepit pillar of bone. In the center of them, amidst the mass of writhing and skittering bone was the hellcat, hissing and yowling with such fury that the screeches of the dead sounded like the delicate melodies of a flute by comparison. She launched herself straight up in a burst of blue flame that all but incinerated the scrabbling mass of dead in her wake.

She landed on the vessel with heavy impact, falling to one knee, right in front of Futo. The folds of her dark green dress had collapsed under the weight of the water like they were made of lead and the fiery blaze of her hair clung to her temples. She had lost one of her black ribbons causing her left braid to become partially undone. Orin made no attempt to contain the fury in her voice.

Sis, now that. Was. Rude!

She slammed her spellcard down against the prow of the boat, scraping her hand across the deck to steady herself. Small ribbons of wood incandesced into delicate spirals of ash as the kasha’s claws curled and stripped wood from the deck of the vessel. “Not so fast.”

"屍霊「食人怨霊」-- Corpse Spirit "Vengeful Cannibal Spirit"

Compelled by the power of the spellcard, the onryou gathered in threes in rings around the vessel, slowly rotating inwards towards both the immortal and kasha. The curses and hatred of the dead were palpable, forming a roiling miasma in the center of the space enclosed by the dead spirits. The suppressing orb of energy became more and more volatile as the spirits drew closer and closer in preparation for a small, but potent, explosion that threatened to snuff any life caught in its expanse.

Re: [PoST - Round 2] Mononobe no Futo vs. Rin Kaenbyou

For that short moment, everything melded into one before Futo's eyes: the kasha's red locks, the maelstrom of burning death and destruction around them, and the hungry spirits trailing behind... Even with her single-minded attention on her foe, all that she could see as she forced her boat to increase its speed was a mishmash of colors that quickly faded into a fiery red. The only thing that allowed her to realize that her attack had been successful was the jolt from the bow before the cold splash from the lake's water rained over her - and that when her vision returned, Orin was gone.

Futo immediately slumped on the deck, her teeth chattering. The absence of her enemy brought the pain that she had suffered back into her mind, and before she knew it, her legs had already given way. The onryou's bites and Orin's infernal fire are painful on their own, tearing and searing through her layers of clothes to injure the body beneath, but the shikaisen realized that her wounds were deeper than her flesh. For a renegade mortal who has cheated death for so long, the punishment from the underworld felt all the more severe to the hermit, and Orin had brought a slice of it straight to her.

It was as if the spirits were gnawing on her spirit. Even though they were quiet now, she could still hear their screams echoing inside her head. Breathing rapidly, she clutched her spellcard in her hand to calm herself... just as the hellcat reappeared in her full demonic glory, encased in too much skulls and bones and looking as angry as, well, hell.

Futo screams. It's an extremely unnerving sight to behold, and even more so when Orin boards her ship, making it shake and wobble dangerously on the water. If the kasha has been a terror when she's playfully insolent, to have her furious - and soaked, like a ghost in one of those watery horror stories - and so close to her when she's still reeling from the entire experience is more than enough to make Futo scramble as far away from her as her small boat allows. The thought of jumping out of the ship and swimming off to the shore appears in her mind, but she knows that it won't do her any good. Being surrounded by whirling flames - and now, rings upon rings of vengeful spirits that are more eager than ever to make a feast out of her body and soul as well, she needs to have a better escape plan than that.

Which she, luckily enough, has.

Surrounded by heat and malevolent air, Futo tries to shift her emotion somewhere else - anywhere other than crippling fear. While still trembling, she smiles weakly to the kasha as she extends an arm out of the boat, sweeping across the lakes and pointing toward the statues. "Verily, I may have gone into the depths of hell itself... but 'tis not dolls that I have brought." Her hand glows as a fire starts on her palm, crackling as it bursts and grows into a large sphere. "They are fuel... nay, signposts."

The ball of fire explodes out of Futo's hands, trailing backward and igniting the nearest statue, burning it to crisp in an instant before asserting its magical nature; instead of simply dissipating after all the wood is burnt to crisp, the ball simply leaps toward the next statue, charring that silent monk in turn.

As the red flames of blasphemy proceeds in curves and turns, cutting through its blue, infernal counterpart and burning through the wall of onryou, the boat Iwafune starts to plow through the water backwards and follow its trail, carrying Futo and Orin on top. The shikaisen, too, starts to stand up - she can feel her strength surging back as the plates carried by the statues are destroyed one after another, ritually freeing the invisible spirits bound inside. They are nowhere as powerful as Orin's spirits such that they can manifest themselves in the physical realm, but they are boosting the shikaisen's magic even as they are freed.

If nothing else, at least she feels more confident and well-equipped in facing the horrors of hell now. "N-now, kasha!" Futo bellows as she moves forward in an attempt to grasp at her collar and arm, hoping to push and throw her out of the boat. "Prepare thyself for judgment! I do not fear drowning thee one more time...!"

In truth, even Futo know that her fire cannot pierce through so many spirits, and that she has been so weakened that she may not be able to hold out for too long even with the help from her plates. Her only hope for a chance of survival is her last spellcard of flames, and she needs to gather the faith from somewhere to activate it. If the hungry spirits and the kasha truly believes that she is unbeatable, perhaps she can do something...

[[ I am dreadfully sorry on the tardiness of my reply. Things have been hellishly busy 'round here. I am deeply sorry for the inconvenience and I greatly appreciate your patience! ]]

The hellcat shook with a violent hiss, her free hand pawing at her ears as they fluttered in irritation from the water lodged in their delicate folds. The sudden motion caused the tangled mass of her ruined braid to tumble down in front of her face, obscuring all but one eye and a sliver of the venomous sneer that was stretched tight across her lips. The pupil of her one visible eye was like a small black pinprick lost in a flashing sea of ruby, and the intensity of her gaze was enough to freeze blood. She shuddered again and shed heavy droplets of water that quickly sizzled into vapor in the parched air.

Between the blow from the prow of the ship and the torment of the water in her feline ears, Orin wasn’t quite steady on her feet, though she was doing her best to disguise it. As the immortal desperately scrambled to put as much distance as she could between herself and the red-headed spitfire, Orin slammed her other hand down in front of her, raking the surface of the wood with her claws with a harsh screech. She clawed herself forward on all four towards with deliberate strides, stalking ever closer to Futo.

With one last shambling step she draws close enough to touch the the cowering retainer and dares to press her face up against the human’s own. Her lips curl menacing over her teeth. She takes the time to savor Futo’s terror, exhaling a deep breath in a growl that shifts to a purring laugh. The mocking noise is almost lost amongst the bedlam that had erupted as the spirits continue to stalk in slow circles about the pair. The gnashing skulls draw well within arm’s reach, but no closer. The kasha is too close to Futo to make the full use of her spellcard without risking harm to herself.

"Verily, I may have gone into the depths of hell itself... but 'tis not dolls that I have brought." Her hand glows as a fire starts on her palm, crackling as it bursts and grows into a large sphere. "They are fuel... nay, signposts."

Orin bolts upright at the sound of Futo’s boast, watching as the scarlet flame of blasphemy arched from statue to statute and immolated the icons. Though they may have been invisible to human eyes, the hellcat could sense the resurgence of the spirits trapped within the crude wooden idols. The sudden lurch of the boat caught Orin off her guard and she cringed at the thought of going for another swim. She was quick to recover, purposefully falling forward and digging her claws into the sacred-boat-turned-battering-ram-now-scratching-post. The momentum carried her back towards the prow of the ship, peeling away ribbons of wood and leaving deep grooves in surface.

"Prepare thyself for judgment! I do not fear drowning thee one more time...!"

Rin’s tails thrashed left to right at the threat, she rose as the immortal lunged at her. She wrapped her hands around Futo’s own wrists as the taoist grappled against her, burying her claws into futo’s tattered sleeves and twisting her wrists outwards as to keep the fair haired hermit from getting a strong grip. The kasha did not oppose Futo’s charge, but redirected it with a sharp twirl on the ball of her foot and unceremoniously tossed the shikaisen from her own vessel.

Judgment? You are all doomed, an’ all the better the sooner ya learn to accept it. There is no escape, sis. You should know this better than anyone.

The kasha spat the words with all the contempt she could manage. Not being drown again in the hateful, hateful water was a small victory, but she didn’t rest on her laurels. The exhaustion from channeling her fell arts was had already set in. So completely lost in her rage, she hadn’t realize how much of her reserves she had bled away summoning the horde of cursed spirits... and if they couldn’t have their pound of flesh from the immortal.. ‘Well Sis, let’s not think about that....

With a flick of her hand she sent several of flaming skulls into the water chasing after Futo. Their mobility would be severely limited under the water... but she had other intentions for them. With a silent command, the first pair detonated under the surface of the water. The concussive force of the undead depth charge rocked the boat once more. The kasha’s mane of red hair went lopsided as she shook her head, trying once more in vain to dislodge all of the water from her ears. Her head shook again with a pair of sneezes and annoyed snort.

The reflexes of a cat are certainly nothing to scoff at. Even though Futo tried to push Orin out of the boat, she only felt her body being moved around instead, and she was already falling head-first into the water before she could realize it. The water still feels cool despite all the flames that are raging above its surface, but the shikaisen's face is burning from the shame and indignity from being thrown out of her own boat.

Gasping for breath, Futo wades in the water to keep herself afloat - a simple task that is made difficult by her shredded robes that keep getting in the way of her movement, as well as her undone ponytail. Brushing a lock of silver aside from her eyes, she quickly cranes her neck toward the kasha on her boat and lets loose a string of curses, shaking a spellcard-clutching fist at her. "Churlish pirate! I shall have thy hide for this--"

Her shouting is cut short as a sudden explosion below throws her into the rocking waves, forcing her to have a swallowful of the Misty Lake. Coughing and sputtering, she casts her gaze downward and sees the shadows of the rest of the evil spirits. While the first charge doesn't seem to fully hit her, she now has an idea of how powerful they could be - and being stranded in the water like this, she's pretty much doomed, just like the infernal cat had said.

Futo bites her lips. If she's only on her boat--

And then she realizes it - that vessel is still hers, and she might be able to at least get her revenge. Futo immediately swims forward to avoid the onryou in the water, her eyes darting around the lake as if trying to find something. Her strokes may be clumsy, what with her arms and legs often moving out of rhythm in her excitement, but she's putting all her strength to wade to the perfect spot on the lake; and in the meantime, she quietly steers her boat toward another direction in some distance away, moving it quietly in hope that Orin will think that it's only moving because of the waves.

Every time she jerks her head backward, she sees the dark spots where the onryou are keep getting closer, and that the few seconds that she has before she's blown out of the water is about to run out. She stares at the kasha one more time with a hateful glare to rival her own some time ago, and... starts to speed her boat up. Cutting through the water, it flies through the water and takes Orin on a rough ride through the lake, although her troubles have only begun.

Futo has stopped swimming, and is closing one eye as she tries to align the boat with one spot on the lake; a spot that happened to be passed by a dragon vein, a geographic feature that is pulsing with energy waiting to be tapped.

"Standing Mountain...!"

Futo extends her hand toward the bottom of the lake, causing the earth to protrude upward and smash against the boat's underside. The newly-formed mountain quickly recedes back to its original height, but it has done its job - having pushed the boat while it's sailing at such a high speed, it launched both vessel and kasha in the air, throwing Orin right toward a grimly smiling Futo, her long, wet hair clinging to the sides of her face.

"A most warm welcome," she said, as she raised her spellcard high, "to thy retribution...!" Just in case Orin manages to stop her still swimming onryou from exploding, the shikaisen decides to kickstart the process herself. The spellcard starts to glow, and Futo's hands are once again filled with fire, just as with the beginning of the fight - but they keep growing stronger such that the lake's water itself starts to hiss and boil around the intense flames.

"Last Word... Inferno Reformation!"

The flames grow into a sphere of fire in her raised hands, which she flings with all her might toward Orin's exploding spirits. Normally, they would burst and start to engulf the whole battlefield, not unlike the kasha's magic, but in this case... Futo can only catch a glimpse of Orin's figure before her entire vision goes white and her entire self is flung with great force.
