[Halloween Party] All Hallow's Eve

Locations of interest: Ruined Western Mansion, Scarlet Devil Mansion
Forum rules
The river that flows down the Youkai Mountain drains into this lake. The poor visibility over the lake and the surrounding forests makes it appear to be very large, although one can easily walk around it. It is inhabited by behemothic fish.

Located on a ridge near the lake is the Scarlet Devil Mansion. A grand building of European styling, with few windows, an extensive basement, and an interior warped and enlarged through magical means. The clock tower houses a turret clock that only tolls at night.

Also nearby is the former Prismriver mansion. Once the home of the aristocratic Prismriver family, it now lies ruined and forgotten save by the three poltergeist sisters that remain.

You don't look like royalty to me. You don't even have a crown!

"...... What." Beat. "Whaaaaat?"

Kurumi turned to look to this 'boy', with narrowed eyes. There was something.. Odd about him, but of course she was more concerned about the insults slung in her direction. "You dare address Kurumi, Queen of Everything, in that manner, you little snot? What would you know about ruling anything, you are but a... A uh... You are just a paper boy! I will have you know, that they had fallen ill because they had finished constructing a gigantic statue under my appearance! A giant statue made of steel as tall as this mansion!"

"Why it would be unnatural if they didn't fall ill at all!"

She flipped back a lock of her hair with a 'hmph', before looking to Komachi and Youmu once more, "Mnnn? Nonsense, I insist! After all, the young princess needs a perfect role model, does she not? And no mere maid can pull off such a job, no no, that would just be silly! Ah ah ahhhhhhhh!" After a moment, she hands Komachi the tray of snacks. "If you would take this for me. And if you would join me, Princess, I shall educate you in the social art of knocking people dead with mere presence! You see, the maid is only partially correct: A party is to have fun by proving yourself better than others and then everyone will admire you. That's the basics, you know."

"So you are a tyrant then?" Flandre easily retorted, "That's so much more worse you know. At least the lady in this place treats her servants with respect." She then started pacing around the vampire, skipping every few steps in her lecture, never really stopping a beat.

Perhaps after a moment, the 'boy' spoke up from behind Kurumi, "You shouldn't really go spouting your misdeeds like that~ words are powerful and frightening things. I mean, hasn't the Bunbunmaru ruined so many youkai reputations? As a paper boy I can probably attest that information travel faster than the speed of sound around here!"

"Especially you since you haven't even met the other Scarlet Devil. Why I bet she might even irk her enough to challenge you." Flandre warned, though her tone sounded a lot more playful than a simple stern warning. "I hear her sister keeps her locked away somewhere in here, 'lest she steps out and devour all the servants and visitors!" Flandre was certainly having fun trying to spread rumors of her notoriety, it'd be even more fun if she could scare the socks off of anyone when it came time for her double to appear.

"You see, she's got some rather ugly wings when she was born, so she tore them off and made some prettier looking ones...but she needed decorations. I heard she'd sneak around the mansion and kidnap poor maidservants and guests so she could stuff their souls into little crystals to make them glow. Though I suppose we probably won't need to worry about that too much, she should still be locked away since there are guests--" a beat, then Flandre casually looked behind Kurumi, tipping her hat in feigned surprise and quickly hid behind Kurumi, deliberately spinning the vampire around to face...a sheet ghost, with multicolored crystal wings.

"There she is! You best run for the hills!"

While the little half ghost 'princess' and her shinigami 'maid' follow the costumed Remilia, she gets a gentle correction of her misconception about their hostesses costume. Not a fairy, but an angel is what the Scarlet Devil is supposed to be. Youmu does not know all that much about angels; little more than that they are supposed to be messengers and heralds, of a powerful, but vengeful god. She vaguely remembers a story about said god causing a huge flood, because he didn't like the people living in his area. That didn't strike the young gardener as very polite. And it would be a huge mess, all the soil washed away and silt covering most everything.

Also, the poor plants.

The offer of an explanation is welcome, maybe it would help her not offend this evening's hostess any further. "T-thank you, Komachi-san."

That was a few moments ago however. Right now she finds herself confronted by the Vampire Queen of Everything, who is currently getting quite thoroughly lectured by the newspaper boy who suddenly appeared out of nowhere. Well, from underneath a table actually, but that is still enough of a surprise appearance.

The presence of her friend gives the little girl still overwhelmed from finding herself playing the role of a princess some calming support, reinforced by the physical contact of a hand on her shoulder. The flustered 'princess' simply nods when Komachi deflects the generous offer of 'motherly' guidance, whatever that would have resulted in. Hopefully not a similar fate to that of the eight servants. The reason for their illness was after all a little strange and quite alarming. Their was apparently caused by exhaustion from overwork. Work to erect a giant statue. The silver haired half ghost has a bit of trouble understanding the notion that Kurumi seems to be in fact proud of that result, obviously regarding it as something that merited boasting about. That in itself is something Youmu regards as clearly unnatural.

With a bit of startled surprise the young 'princess' finds herself addressed again and has to stop her musing to reply, a little hastily. "Uwah! N-no that is n-not something you n-need to do, Miss Queen of E-Everything. I trust Komachi-san to l-lead me t-through this." Not that the shinigami's firm grip on her shoulder leaves any doubt about her choice in the matter anyway. There was that expression she had once and it seems to apply her. "S-she has my confidence in t-this matter." The thought of having someone as a mother, who makes her servants ill with statues is a bit too scary to embrace.

"I'd rather not drop people d-dead at all. I couldn't go anywhere a-any more. I d-do not want to make them ill with overwork either, because that would be very bad." Being admired might be a little tempting, but it is not what Youmu really wants. "I don't think t-that would be much fun, Miss Queen of Everything. I was taught, that there is no need to prove something you already know." Sound advice, even if the young girl is not always able to follow it herself. "I will try my best to have fun t-though and hope you have fun as well."

When the young 'newspaper boy' begins to chide Kurumi for being a tyrant, the little half ghost listens with slowly growing concern. The topic turns toward Remilia's sister, but something seems off about the description. A clear overemphasis on any bad points the 'newspaper boy' could find and the silver haired gardener is sure that the story about the crystals being imbued with trapped souls must be a clear fabrication. Shikieiki-sama would never allow that to happen here in Gensokyo after all. Gathering her courage, the small half ghost speaks up in a timid voice.

"Umm .. I do not think you k-know Flandre as well as you think. T-true, she can be scary sometimes, but she is not as bad as you try to make her appear. I have visited here before and we all sat down to have tea without any of the trouble you s-speak of." Not any more trouble than is the usual norm for Gensokyo at least. "I don't believe that Remilia-sama would lock her sister away like that." She had heard some stories regarding that, but few of them have proven true during her visits to the mansion. "I am pretty sure that Flandre is around here somewhere in costume and having-Eeek!"

The little half-ghost is quite obviously still no good with scary things and reacts immediately to the spooky presence. If not for Komachi's firm grip on her shoulder, she would have fled, but with no chance to run away, she can only tremble in place instead and stare fearfully at the floating apparition.

"A g-ghost!"

There's something satisfying about being addressed as the 'Queen of Everything'. She likes you, Youmu. Kurumi likes you a lot, even if she can't tell if the half-ghost is acting 'in character' or not. "Tsk. Well, if you change your mind, you know where to find me, Little Miss Princess."

"A t- tyrant?" Kurumi repeated with a slightly, -very- slightly nervous smile. That wasn't her intent to symbolize herself as, obviously. But then it's made a little more clear that this newspaper brat knows his ins and outs about the Devil Mansion. Perhaps she could get some really good information from him after all!

That is, depending on how long she could put up with his blasphemous words! "D- Don't be ridiculous.. You are simply blowing my simple words out of proportion, that's all.." The other Scarlet sister. Remilia hinted about her, and suddenly Kurumi's entire attention is gotten. In fact, her eyes narrow a bit as her expression grows more serious.

A bead of sweat falls down the side of her face, and she swallows hard, "S- Surely... Exaggerated rumors.. Who would believe such a ridiculous tale?" And yet once spun around, she jerks back in shock, "WHAT?"

A ghost!

Perhaps Kurumi allowed herself to get too deeply immersed in the newsboy's tale because what she saw, combined with YOumu's cry, made her come to the conclusion that Flandre is some sort of zombie vampire cannibal ghost, "OH CRAP! (WE ARE NOT FINE ANYMORE!) GET THE HELL OUT, WE'RE ALL DEAD!" she shoves Not-Flandre to the side, "Out of my way!" then makes a break for the nearest window.

Which she then breaks with her body as she dives out of it face first, and flies away to leave everyone else to die because, seriously, she does not get paid enough to deal with that kind of madness.

It seemed that the party was now in full swing. The first thing had been broken and yes, she'll be billing you for that Kurumi. She hadn't even had a chance to properly harass the other vampire before she made a break for it. It seemed, however, that her dear sister had done the harassing for her. If she was going to miss out on her fun due to anyone, then she was glad that it had at least been her own sister that did it. The whole thing is watched from a slight distance by the Scarlet Angel, who doesn't seem to see fit to tell the Vampire Queen of Everything that she is actually speaking to the younger of the Scarlet sisters. Why would she do that when it was more interesting to just watch her go crazy? The broken window was a mild annoyance, but it lent further authenticity to her haunted house look. What sort of haunted house had no broken windows? A bad one! So it was a small favor. But she'd still be sending the bill. As long as the empty log the blonde vampire slept in had a mailbox, at least!

Remilia, naturally, can see through her sister's disguise. One does not spend hundreds of years with someone and not learn to recognize them when they dress a bit different! And while she has been well behaved, it is her duty as the big sister to make sure she stays that way, so she walks towards her sibling, the ghost 'princess' and her self-proclaimed escort. "Hm. I guess it was simply a little too frightening for her. I shall have to remember to mock her for this the next time I see her. Sakuya! Mark that down in my appointment book, will you?" She doesn't look to notice if the nekomaid even notices her words, though considering her track record, she probably would have heard them even if the mansion was on fire inside of a tornado that was also poisonous. "The turnout is not quite as large as I had expected, unless you count the oni's army, but I suppose a small party now and then again is not so bad. I trust the two of you are enjoying yourselves?" She is, of course, addressing Youmu and Komachi with those words. "Although it seems you've lost your conversation partner. I suppose I shall simply have to fill in for the time being." That should do a lot to calm Youmu's nerves, having the one behind the whole party coming over to talk to her. This was surely the way to get her to relax! She nods at the little blonde paper 'boy'. "And I trust my sister has not been giving you any trouble?"

Komachi was usually a fairly easy going, and playful person, but this vampire seemed able to rub even her the wrong way. With pride she listed off atrocities spawned of her narcissism. And even though Komachi knew she was simply, over, acting the part, the entire scene was simply obnoxious. Before she could respond to the 'Queen', Youmu shot down Kurumi's proposal.

Komachi quietly sat through the exchange between Kurumi, and Flandre. She had heard the rumors about the little sister, of course. Most had, but it was difficult to tell what was truth and what was exaggeration. The paperboy, who Komachi already knew to be the monster in question, had no qualms with painting a terrifying picture of herself. Which all culminated in Kurumi leaping out the nearest window.

Youmu's panic would have been somewhat amusing, if the shinigami could have stopped staring at the window. She had no idea how to even process the vampire's response. She was so stunned in fact, that she didn't even take notice of Remilia joining them, until she spoke. “No, Flandre was just telling us an interesting story about how she mutilated herself, and used dark rituals to empower her wings. I'm not sure I would count it as quite true, but it fit the theme at least.”

The little pandemonium tch'ed at Sakuya's request, looking visibly annoyed for a brief moment before relenting with a small sigh. "Guess they've already made a good enough first impression... Alright, I'll just keep a few fer the daimyo's personal bodyguard."

In the next instant, all but the nearest six of Suika's miniature copies disappeared in tiny puffs of smoke, taking their samurai garb with them, and leaving the party noticeably quieter, if still suitably loud. "That good enough?"

The oni and half her bodyguard stood up, leaving three miniatures sitting at the bar. "Hey, gate guard~! Keep the liquor comin' fer these three, ok?"

Scanning around the room for anyone especially interesting, the ever-drunk girl's eyes settled on the group forming around Kurumi. It seemed someone masquerading as a paper boy was stirring up trouble--a rowdy oni was just what a group like that needed to bring it to a boil!

Well, that put a damper on that. It seemed the "dark queen"'s conversation partners didn't need the little oni's help bothering Kurumi after all. Despite the setback, it still seemed an interesting enough group, so she kept up her course--but did let one of her "guards" break off to go try to play with Alice's orbiting dolls.

"What's the big idea, scarin' that one off before Suika even got a chance ta get a coupla ribs in?" The grin plastered on the drunkard's face made it impossible to interpret her complaint as genuine.

Even if 'cat got your tongue' was an expression Kogasa recognized, it was only further obscured by the fact that Chen's name was unknown to the Yukari impersonator. Though the karakasa could certainly catch a chin with her tongue, how the converse could hold true was quite the riddle.

Regardless, confused expressions were not conducive to a convincing impersonation. As a result, the gapbrella falls back on her instinctive mask, something quite characteristic of Kogasa in particular: a mischievous smirk adorned with a little pink tongue sticking out. Anyone who was familiar with the true form underneath the 'costume' might garner a sense of deja vu, or at least find it oddly familiar. Beyond that, a cryptic shake of her head would be the only response Alice gets.

In the meantime, it would seem some other guests had stirred up quite the commotion. From the noise level alone, The not-gap knew a surprise when she heard it. Was someone trying to upstage the master? Yukari-kasa couldn't have any of that, especially not on the very night of her coming into brilliance.

"It's been a pleasure chatting, you two. If you'll excuse me, there's something else that catches my fancy."

Without even waiting for a response, Kogasa can scarcely contain herself as she approaches the others caught up in some broken window fiasco. Fickle and perhaps a little curt, hopefully she's doing it right, even if the accent is still completely wrong. In contrast, the not so elegant tsukumogami approaches the growing crowd with a notably less elegant gait at first, but catches herself halfway there, returning to a stride much closer to the one she walked in with.

She'd observe silently from the shadows for now. Whether Kogapsa realizes it or now, she actually exudes a very convincing aura reminiscent of the real Yukari when she does this. Too bad it's not because of her own power...

It takes the frightened half ghost a moment to register Remilia's question and she turns around quickly, away from that ghost. Why did Flandre have to dress up as a ghost of all things, when everyone knows that Youmu is no good with scary things? "Ah! Umm .. yes, we are enjoying ourselves, Remilia-sama." In Komachi's case that is probably -- and very obviously so -- true, but Youmu gives the floating crystal winged sheet a wary side-glance. She appears to be rather scared of it. "A c-conversation would be nice." And maybe take her mind off of the scary ghost. Although Remilia is scary in her own way, the little gardener had been at the mansion a few times before and come to appreciate the Scarlet Devil's company. The nod, or at least it's significance had clearly been missed, quickly showcased by Youmu's reply. "Ah, Flandre just surprised me with her costume. You know I am no good with scary stuff." The young girl balls her little hands into fists, tightly holding onto the front of her elegant gown. "She hasn't said anything yet."

Then her 'servant' replies and an expression of confusion enters Youmu's features, while she listens. Her blue eyes focus on the young 'paperboy' and take in little previously missed details. "Uwah! Flandre! I didn't recognize you in that costume. Umm .. s-sorry for not realizing." The now flustered half ghost gives Flandre a quick bow to apologize, just as something starts to nag at her mind. "B-but why did you talk about yourself like that? It was a little scary and .. umm .." Youmu stares at the broken window and decides that she does not really need to also mention 'over the top'. The Vampire Queen of Everything had reacted in such a manner that it was not necessary. The nagging feeling increases and the little gardener starts to wonder about something. Then she suddenly blurts out. "Wait .. if Flandre is already here disguised as a paperboy.. then who is the ghost?!"

Well that was amusing. Flandre couldn't believe that actually work. The little paperboy ended up rolling on the floor in laughter as she watched Kurumi, Miss Queen of Everything run off into the night by flying through the window. Hey, it wasn't her who broke the windows this time! Once she had her fill she finally got up, picking up her fallen hat. She looked over to see Remilia and Suika there commenting on her handiwork.

"Well you snooze you lose, tricking people is a first come first serve sort of thing~" Flandre responded to Suika, giving an amused grin at the oni. She then looked over to Komachi afterwards "Well it's totally untrue, but you have to admit that it makes for a fun little amateur story~

The other 'Flandre' seemed very anxious under the sheet when Youmu seemed to be freaking out over her presence. "Um...y-young mistress? Can I go now?" She asked nervously, pulling off the sheet to reveal herself as one of the fairy maids with what seemed like Flandre's wings taped onto her back awkwardly with her fairy wings.

"Yes, you can, just lemme get these back first." Flandre proceeded to remove the wings from her double and places them back onto her back with a nice clicking sound.

"Yukari" kept behaving oddly. In fact it would be easy to claim that she acted almost entirely unlike the youkai of boundaries. The speech was off and the lack of speech was even more off, given the constant needling that Yukari was known for. However, the blond youkai was also known for being highly eccentric, very clever and especially for trying to keep those dealing with her off balance, so it might have been a ploy to distract others.

Alice ate a bit of a spring roll as she pondered the topic and how to approach dealing with it without making a fool of herself. Playing it cool and keeping up with whatever was thrown at her seemed the best. Or just letting her leave, that worked too, it hadn't been a particularly exciting conversation anyway. "Don't let me keep you." Alice's customary smile didn't waver as she nodded slightly to acknowledge "Yukari" leaving.

Once alone with the kasha, the magician took a sip from her beer. "Interesting evening. A probably fake Yukari, a terrible Flandre costume and the most obnoxious vampire in Gensokyo making a scene. It almost seems like Remilia planned all this."

The mini-Suika on the other hand, found themselves face to face with one of the miniature witches that wasn't carrying any of their mistress' food. It quickly dodged out of the way, making a gesture mimicking the eyepulling motion to taunt the mini-oni into following it, before dashing away through the crowd, heading straight towards Sunny.

“Ah that’s well an’ good. I’m surprised to hear the lil’ furball’s not causing a ruckus with all the trouble she manages to find. Though I can’t be too harsh an’ criticize, given how trouble follows so quick on my heels it even steps on my feet. Guess it just comes with being cat... an’ a black one at that. Otherwise, I am doing just fine. Keepin’ the home fires burnin’ y’know. Everything’s so lively down there, an’ I’ve been so busy I had to put new wheels on my cart. Not that I’m complaining. But I am sure there are a great many mysteries ya need to attend to, an’ I just happened to stumble upon something rather curious myself.” The hellcat punctuated her comment with an feral smile, staring right at the faux-gap-witch as if Orin was trying to visually pick apart Yukari like a piece of meat. Despite the risk of seeming rude, the hellcat’s gaze followed the gap-brella as she passed amongst the other guests with all the intensity of a lioness stalking a gazelle.

The puppeteer’s words broke her from her focus, and the kasha turned to answer Alice with a much kinder smile. Her large velvety ears pricked forward, causing part of the ornamental headdress to clink. “Pharaohs? Oh, right. I read ‘bout them some in a book Satori-sam’nya--” ‘Oh ain’t that quaint, sis, why don’tcha just go ‘nyan-nyan’ an’ scratch up the furniture while you're at it. Show some class, Orin. “That is, Lady Satori has a few books layin’ around. This one particular was real fascinating. It was a foreign spell books with all sorta wards an’ rites an’ rituals for the dead, and that piqued my interest. I couldn’t exactly read the inscriptions, ‘course it was more pictures than writin’... well, more like the pictures were the words, but I could follow what it meant. Seems like the whole lot of ‘em were obsessed with death. That an’ they worshipped cats, which is just fine by me.”

The kasha paused to fix apart of the crown that tangled in her hair, brushing her free hand through her bangs. She paused a moment to sample the shrimp. ‘Oh these are delicious. I should chase down that impostor-cat-maid an’ see if any are left.’ Both of the kasha’s tails flicked in delight as she polished off the shrimp, waiting a jot before affirming Alice’s suspicions. “Oh she seems mysterious an’ flighty enough to be the ol’ witch, but I doubt that it’s more than just deception. That isn’t her. The other one though.” Orin nodded her head sideways towards where Flandre was.

Well, at least where her wings were. “She’s got the scent of blood an’ death all kicked up ‘round her. Even here ya can still smell she reeks of it. I wouldn't say the Lady Vamp orchestrated this whole affair as a way to shame Miss. Kurumi, but sis, I don’t think I’ve ever seen the other vamp leave in such a hurry and I don't think Ms. Scarlet's going to be shedding any tears at her sudden departure. Well, maybe over the window.” Orin snuck a few more appraising looks at Alice’s costume. If there were any flaws in the craftsmanship, the hellcat sure couldn’t see them. ‘Ya look almost threadbare by comparison, Sis, she has ya beat there.' Orin picked idly at the end of a loose thread on her kalasiris. 'An’ those dolls too are useful, y’shoulda brought a couple of the fairies along.’ Orin leaned in, an with a conspiratorial whisper asked "Can they even shed tears, sis?"

Komachi nodded to Flandre. "I didn't think it was. You don't hear as many tales as I have, and not pick up how to tell an exaggeration from reality. Sometimes however, " her friendly expression turned cold for only a second, "reality can be that gruesome."

She looked over to Suika, and raised her hand in a mock drinking sign. She hoped the oni would catch on to her invite later. With Youmu sufficiently reassured, and calmed, it seemed like a good time to let go of her shoulder. It seemed that people were starting to gather around them. Unsurprising, considering what happened. It was probably a good time to tell a story of her own. She glanced around the room taking in the different costumes. Aya, Rin, and Alice in particular.

"Well considering the nature of this event, and the many incarnations of death that decided to attend, would you all like to know some things about shinigami and death rituals?"

Orin's words immediately perked Alice' interesting. For a second her controlled facade broke and a look of genuine surprise and curiosity flashed over her face. "Really? I guess it's not too surprising for it to end up in Gensokyo...Although, I'd have more expected it to be in Hakugyokurou or here. Seems more thematically appropriate." She gave the cat a small, amused smile. "It's the Egyptian Book of the Dead. It explains how to prepare people for the afterlife. It kinda surprises me that there are cats in it, Bastet was more associated with war and motherhood." She paused for a bit to eat a dumpling, looking thoughtful as she chewed. "I wonder what kind of spells it has and if they actually work. Not that it matters, it's a great costume either way."

"I agree." Nodding in agreement, Alice shifted her weight slightly, trying to help her legs relax some more. She really should have thought this costume through before deciding on it. "Although, Yukari likes defying expectations and to catch people unaware, so it's possible, if unlikely, that it's her trying to trick people into thinking she's somebody pretending to be her for some strange reason. I don't think anybody can pretend to understand how she thinks or what her goals are." She sent a doll on the lookout for the "Yukari", just to make sure she wasn't listening in on them. "But, you're right, it most likely isn't her."

"And I don't think anybody is going to miss Kurumi's presence. At least she didn't sing this time around or make too many proclamations about her greatness." She still remembered that incredibly irritating, and irritatingly catchy, song Kurumi had been singing to open the second concert Mystia had held. Even worse, she found herself humming a few bars of it. Even so Orin's admiration of the craftsmanship of her costume wasn't lost on her and the magician moved subtly again to better show it off, even if her feet protested.

"I...don't actually know." Caught by Orin's question, a look of irritation crossed Alice' face that she tried to conceal as best she could. "I'd guess they can't"

Oh. It was just a fairy in a costume, not a real ghost. The little princess gives out a sigh of relief. Being scared of a fake ghost is embarrassing enough to make the half ghost blush. Her gaze wanders over to the broken window for a few moments. At least she had managed to not overreact in such an extreme manner as that strange Queen of Everything person did.

"Umm .. you can detach them?" The silver haired girl stares at the now rainbow crystal winged paper boy. And they click? The young half ghost stares at Flandre with astonishment, before she remembers her manners and absent-mindedly bids the flustered fairy a polite farewell. Although she does not look at the fairy maid, so maybe she does not fully remember them after all right now.

Youmu lets out a small sigh of relief, when Komachi confirms her belief in Flandre. Mostly, at least, but really .. it surely couldn't be nearly as gruesome as Flandre had made it out to be.

Feeling the loss of weight on her shoulder, the little half ghost turns towards her tall friend with a timid smile of appreciation. The offer of a story apparently suiting this festival sounds really nice, but ..

"Umm .. will that be a scary tale, Komachi?"
