[PoST - Round 2] Sakuya Izayoi vs. Momiji Inubashiri

Locations: Marisa Kirisame's House, Alice Margatroid's House, Kourindou, The Hakurei Shrine, Gate to Makai
Forum rules
The Forest of Magic is a place brimming with energy and power. The dense trees and deep magic that permeates the forest makes it almost suffocating, but also seems to attract a number of youkai. The forest isn't travelled by many, and only the strange or the magical choose it as their home. The forest is home to two magical beings, the human magician Marisa Kirisame and the youkai puppeteer Alice Margatroid. Marisa's house seems to double as a shop, an Anything-Goes type of store, but whether or not she does any actual business is something of a mystery. Kourindou, owned by Rinnosuke, is another shop on the edge of the Forest of Magic near the human village, and is frequently visited by humans and youkai alike. The Hakurei Shrine, cared for by the shrine maiden Reimu Hakurei, also resides in a thinner area of the forest, near the great Hakurei border.

[PoST - Round 2] Sakuya Izayoi vs. Momiji Inubashiri

Today was the day. Momiji had been anxious ever since she heard that, despite her loss to Tojiko, she was still in the tournament. While her body still ached from the ghost's attacks, she was more than well enough to fight, and the guardswoman doubted that her opponent would be in perfect condition, either.

Her opponent... Sakuya Izayoi... Head maid of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Sure to be a fierce opponent. They would do battle in the Forest of Magic, roughly halfway between the SDM and Youkai Mountain, at sunset. Momiji left as the sun neared the horizon, flying as fast as she could afford to without tiring. She was wearing her normal black and red long skirt and white shirt with detached sleeves, wanting freedom of motion for this fight. Her eyes scanned the ground below her for either her opponent or a clearing to wait in. Not seeing any signs of her opponent, she descended to the ground in the middle of a large clearing. Planting her sword in the ground, Momiji knelt down and closed her eyes, reviewing her techniques in her mind, her ears alert for any sign of her opponent.

In her state of partial meditation, she couldn't help but remember her fight with Tojiko. It had been the guardswoman's first serious spellcard duel in a while, and yet she couldn't accept that as an excuse. Her pride as a warrior had been wounded badly by that fight. She could not... No, she would not let herself lose a second time in this tournament! She would prove her strength! Momiji's eyes snapped open, a fire burning in them. She was ready for her fight.

The maid had arrived at the predetermined destination with time to spare. She rarely made it a habit to arrive early, as time was always best spent doing something productive, but she thought it was best this time. Though Remilia had not ordered her to win in the fight between herself and Meiling, but no such permission had been given for this round. She sat in one of the trees, leaning back against a branch as she sipped from a mug of tea. Not the most elegant cup, but it sufficed.

She blinked as she saw a shape some distance away set down. Momiji was easy to spot, her regular uniform contrasting brightly against the darkening forest surrounding her. The maid herself had chosen a slightly darker uniform with sleeves for this purpose. It wouldn't do much against a youkai's enhanced senses, but it was something at least. Anything that might give her an edge was worth her time and effort.

It was still early and the maid still had tea in her cup so she decided to wait. She had not been seen yet and so she saw no harm in finishing her cup. It also allowed Momiji time to mentally prepare. It occurred to her that she knew very little about the Tengu. Just what she had been told by others. Not that it really mattered for this fight in particular. She made a mental note to find out more later.

It only took several more minutes for her to finish her drink, letting the cup vanish from her hands as she stepped out of time. She appeared some distance away, next to Momiji. "It's a wonderful evening for a duel, isn't it?" The maid smiled down at the wolf tengu. "Whenever you are ready to begin, I am here."

At the sound of the human's elegant voice, Momiji turned her head sharply. She had neither seen nor heard Sakuya's approach. However, once it became clear a sneak attack was not intended, the guardswoman relaxed somewhat. Still, an opponent that could move like that could be difficult to track, even with her extremely sharp senses.

Calmly, and smiling slightly, Momiji stood up and brushed the dirt off of her skirt. With her opponent here, the tengu began to feel her instincts as a warrior awaken. Pulling her sword from the ground and flicking the dirt from it, she turned to face Sakuya. The human woman didn't appear to be armed, which might leave Momiji with an advantage should she be able to get in close. However, she couldn't forget the potential that close range magic held - it had been such a spell that had defeated the guardswoman in her last fight. Besides that, Sakuya's outfit seemed to suggest a high level of sophistication, something that would likely be reflected in her fighting style. On one hand, it might make her more predictable. On the other, it could just as well mean that the human woman possessed extreme skill with whatever techniques she used.

Deciding that it would be a waste to spend any more time analyzing, Momiji lept back, flying just off the ground, landing across the clearing from Sakuya. The guardswoman pointed her sword at her opponent and called out, "Indeed it is. You must be Sakuya Izayoi. Please, hold nothing back." Her challenge issued, Momiji lowered herself into a fighting stance - shield raised, sword poised to strike, her body relaxed and yet ready to move in any direction in response to her opponent's attack. The thrill of combat was upon the guardswoman. Her earlier concerns were all but forgotten. All that mattered now was the fight.

Had this not been a sanctioned duel, Sakuya would have already struck. But as it was not the case, she stood analyzing Momiji. It was clear the tengu was startled by her sudden appearance. While this was unintentional it did bear with it some fruit. The look of puzzlement on her opponents face made it clear that she was dealing with someone who was ignorant, or at least not well informed of her powers. This could prove to be quite the advantage if she played her cards right.

But then again, she wasn't entirely familiar with Momiji's skills either. The sword was of little concern to her but her shield would prove to be more of a challenge to bypass. The metal would, without a doubt, chip and dull her silver knives. A few damaged knives was of little concern, however, it would be irritating to repair them if Lady Patchouli was too busy or ill to help.

She stood quietly as the wolf tengu drew her blade from the ground. It was a thick and sturdy weapon. Attempting to deflect it would be difficult and blocking was out of the question. It shouldn't be a problem though if she was careful. Even with the tengu's great strength, a larger blade is still unwieldy and carries greater momentum… Then again the Maid had no doubt that the warrior's training had covered such things.

She didn't move as her opponent leaped back, following, analyzing the tengu's movements. Her eyes shifted, glowing bright crimson in the failing light, the air faintly distorting around her eyes and the pocket where her watch rested. She did not reply to her opponent's comment. Words had no place when combat has already been decided. A waste of breath and energy.

She analyzed her opponent's stance, the way she held her sword and shield, waiting. It was only when it was clear that the tengu had no intention of striking first that the maid relaxed. She fell into a loose combat stance, knees slightly bent, arms at her sides. She turned her shoulder in somewhat. She crouched slightly, the human taking a single stride forward and vanishing, the air rippling where she had been.

The faint chill of void filled the air behind Momiji, accompanied by a rustling noise. The maid dropped out of a tree behind the tengu, blades at the ready. All around her flashed, A rain of ornate throwing knives, more any human could throw in a short span of time.

The maid's methods were best left for another time, however, the human dropping low heel swinging back in an arc, attempting to hit Momiji behind the knee. Knives from above and a strike from below. The human truly wasn't holding anything back. Regardless of whether her attack connected or not, the maid would back off, taking to the air and landing lightly some distance away next to a tree, knives drawn in each hand.

The attack was very straight forward. Sudden and brutal, though success had not necessarily been its purpose. No, her knives would not do much against the shield Momiji carried, but the body was not the only thing open to attack. If she could put the tengu on edge, make her paranoid, she could force her opponent to make a mistake.

Momiji stared back as her opponent analyzed her. However, as Sakuya had yet to give any indication of how she would fight, the guardswoman resisted any conjecture as to her opponent's abilities. All she knew is that the maid had appeared beside her with no warning, something that would be of little use in determining what her opponent was capable of. This lack of information meant that Sakuya had the advantage until she made her first strike.

As her opponent rushed, Momiji dropped her stance slightly lower, ready to counter a charging strike. Then, in an instant, the maid was gone. Momiji's sharp eyes narrowed, searching for any indication of Sakuya, when she heard a rustling of leaves behind her. Turning her head slightly, the tengu saw her opponent attempting to kick her knee out from under her. Reacting hastily, Momiji's feet left the ground as she flew forward. While the kick still impacted, as the leg was no longer supporting the swordswoman. Turning with the impact to face her opponent, Momiji saw the other part of her opponent's attack.

It was too late to dodge the attack in its entirety - Momiji wouldn't be able to accelerate fast enough to take herself out of the path of the knives. Instead, she stood her ground and, in moments, the torrent of knives was upon her. Lowering her shield, the guardswoman deflected two which were aimed at her stomach. Raising her sword, she deflected another before it reached her face. Flying to her right to avoid a large cluster, Momiji raised her shield to prevent another blade from piercing her shoulder, though a low-flying knife pierced a hole in her skirt. With a sudden reverse of directions, Momiji flew back to her left, knocking two more knives away with a swing of her sword, though one slipped by and grazed her right shoulder, leaving a shallow cut. Almost out of the storm, the white wolf twisted her body in midair, turning on her side to dodge the last few. Recovering, Momiji landed once again, raising her sword and shield in case Sakuya intended an immediate follow up.

Momiji was surprised, to say the least. As far as she could tell, her opponent had a form of teleportation at her disposal. That essentially eliminated the tengu's advantage in speed. However, if Sakuya intended to confuse the guardswoman with this technique, she would have to try much harder. While teleportation did carry additional benefits, it was similar to extreme speed. Both allowed for rapid approach and retreat, as well as sudden changes in position to gain an offensive or defensive edge. And Momiji had spent much of her life training with other tengu. While this experience wouldn't be able to negate the advantage the maid's powers gave her, it would allow the white wolf to compensate some, hopefully enough to allow her to win their duel.

Noticing that Sakuya seemingly was expecting her to attack, Momiji quickly leapt back and landed again. While the swordswoman would have preferred to attack her opponent up close, against someone who could teleport, she would need to be careful how she got to that distance. Though she was nowhere near close enough to hit her opponent, Momiji made three horizontal slashes with her sword, stepping forward with each, each one creating a circular wave of danmaku which emanated out in all directions from the white wolf. Not wasting any time, Momiji flew to her left, staying just behind the last wave of bullets. She didn't expect any to actually hit the maid, especially since dodging could be as simple as stepping behind the tree she stood by. Holding her position near the danmaku she has fired, Momiji's sharp eyes remained focused on her opponent, looking through the gaps in her bullets. As the curtain neared her opponent, Momiji began to rush along the inside of the circle towards her opponent. Regardless of how Sakuya evaded the bullets, the guardswoman intended them only as a distraction, in order to allow her to rush into melee range and strike with her scimitar.

This had been what Sakuya was hoping. The more pressure the Maid could put on Momiji in close combat, the less inclined the tengu would be to fight her so personally. Despite the shield, Sakuya felt that it would be safest to stay at range for now. Her proficiency with throwing was far better than that of her close quarters combat. Her speed and skill would win her this fight rather than brute force alone.

The maid charged forward into the bullets, turning in to meet each one, slipping through the smallest gaps, letting her heels brush the bullets as she passed, the magical discharge making her skin prickle smoke now trailing from her shoes as she cleared the bullets, twisting, flipping, slowing herself on the ground. She shot off away from Momiji, staying low to the ground, using the trees as cover.

Rather than attempt to flee or dodge the maid held her ground, drawing the first spellcard of the fight. She would not make the mistake of waiting like she did with Meiling. When she heard the duel would be over the forest of magic, the maid had crafted several cards specifically for the location seeing that curtains of suppressive knives would be of little help if the opponent could hide behind a tree.

Decimation: 'Canonical Five'

Five spacial distortions appeared some distance around Momiji, spinning, twisting, whirling around the tengu in a half circle like pattern, weaving in and out of trees with strange, jerky motions. Each seemed to curl in on itself, and explode, shooting bursts of three knives randomly in the general direction of Momiji. They weren't quite aimed, creating lines of suppression around the tengu. The shadows in the trees made them a lot harder to see, the blades flashing whenever they crossed a patch of light. Each one also sprayed black kunai randomly, the blades embedding themselves in trees and in the ground only to vanish several moments later. On occasion, the kunai would collide, sending black shards scattering in all directions. The shards weren't really dangerous, but they were easily sharp enough to cut skin.

Above the forest, Sakuya appeared, hands full of knives, eyes a blaze of crimson light. She spun and whirled, a dervish of metal and and force, dropping long, cage-like streams of knives down onto the field to restrict the tengu's movement.

Momiji had been expecting her opponent to be able to dodge her danmaku. However, she was not expecting her opponent to both be prepared for her follow-up and to stand her ground. The guardswoman took this to be foolishness on the part of the maid, and continued her charge. Then she saw her opponent activate her spellcard. Knowing that spellcards usually left one with an impossibly low chance of survival from up close, she abandoned her attack. Instead, the tengu forced herself to come to a stop, briefly landing and digging the single heels of her geta into the ground to help, before turning and flying away from her opponent, hoping to escape further into the forest.

Slowing after a few seconds, Momiji then noticed several areas around her which seemed off. They kept moving and shifting, and watching them left the guardswoman confused. Then she realized they must be a part of her opponent's spellcard - just in time for the barrage of knives. Picking a direction at random, Momiji attempted to break through the web being carved by Sakuya's blades. There weren't many, so the white wolf was able to weave her way through several and deflect with her sword and shield two which were flying directly at her chest. Still, though, as she dodged the knives she was confused - that attack certainly hadn't seemed impressive enough to be a spellcard.

As if in answer to her thoughts, Momiji heard the sound of many more blades flying through the air. Glancing around quickly, she barely caught sight of movement around her, quickly dropping lower to avoid several kunai. With the storm of blades all around her, she couldn't afford to hesitate. Hitting the ground, the guardswoman sprinted forward out of the way of several more blades before narrowly sidestepping a kunai from straight ahead. Leaping backwards, she took to the air again, flipping backwards mid-flight to avoid two more blades from the side. Weaving between the trees to minimize the number of kunai to focus on, Momiji attempted to escape the storm to no avail. While the trees protected her from some of the blades, she was having extreme difficulty tracking them.

At this point, it was a miracle she had avoided a direct hit, as the attacks came from every direction at once. As one kunai flew at her throat, the guardswoman rushed towards it and raised her shield to block it, not realizing her mistake. As the missile collided with the shield, the blade shattered into a number of shards. Though her shield kept the pieces away from her face, Momiji could feel them tear at her forehead, ears, and torso. Forced to slow down, the guardswoman began dodging more conservatively, floating in one place and moving only enough to avoid being struck by the blades around her. Keeping this up for several seconds, she managed to avoid any significant injuries, though this left her significantly more vulnerable to the shards that flew whenever two kunai struck each other. Suddenly, Momiji heard the leaves above her rustle, before knives started to pour down at her, forcing her to move to avoid being impaled. She resumed her prior tactic of dodging on the move, swerving around the knives as well as slipping past kunai.

As she dodged her way through her opponent's spellcard, Momiji came to the realization that Sakuya was very likely the source of the knives now raining down upon her. Wasting no time, she flew straight up through the canopy, briefly breaking free of the storm of kunai. However, as the guardswoman flew through the leaves she was unable to see her opponent’s blades, and a knife imbedded itself in her shoulder. Though the pain was intense, she continued to fly upward until she was in open air again. Her eyes confirmed her suspicions, as her opponent was firing many streams of knives towards the tengu. Weaving through these blades proved to be surprisingly easy for Momiji, though she could see they were designed to inhibit her movement and that, once the kunai storm caught up, she would be in significant danger without the cover of the trees. Accelerating faster, she quickly reached the same height as her opponent and did not hesitate to activate her own spell card.

Dog Sign "Rabies Bite"

Momiji knew that most of her danmaku could be rendered useless should her opponent return to below the trees, and thus it was fortunate that one of her spell cards excelled at limiting her target's dodging options. Her sword glowing brightly, she swung twice, launching a dense blast of energy above and below her opponent. A few moments later, and the blasts turned, flying at Sakuya from above and below, before they exploded into virtual walls of bullets, with the maid trapped between them. While it was certainly not as elegant or elaborate as her opponent's card, Momiji hoped it would be enough to get her to break off her attack. At this point, the kunai-spewing distortions had reached her once more, and she was having to dodge frantically to avoid getting hit, waiting for a chance to fire another wave of her own.

Re: [PoST - Round 2] Sakuya Izayoi vs. Momiji Inubashiri

Postby Sakuya Izayoi » 18 May 2013 19:34

As crude as the spell was, Sakuya was pleased with its effectiveness. It did what it was intended to do, driving her opponent from cover and into the sky. The maid was a very adaptable fighter, but her skills were best suited for confined areas with little cover. Seeing as she was unable to have it both ways, the human assumed that the openness of the air would be the superior choice. At least there she could use her knife throwing to full effect. It was a risk though. She was also quite aware that this could work just as easily against her. Momiji, as primarily a close range fighter, needed room to maneuver, especially with such a large and cumbersome sword. Even if the tengu had the strength to cleave through the trees below, friction would slow the blade giving the maid greater time to dodge the strikes. Fighting in the open would be catering to both of their primary skill sets but she would not pass up the opportunity to drive her opponent from the forest if it turned out that the space favored her more.

At first, it did seem that she had the advantage. She flickered occasionally, merely collecting her thrown and scattered knives as she pursued the tengu, raining knives upon her like raindrops from above. The human was ready as Momiji shot up and out of the forest, shooting to one side as she continued to release stream after stream of knives at her opponent, this time from a more forward angle.

Even as Momiji activated her card, Sakuya thought little of it, too focused on maintaining her own spell to worry about what she assumed was a bomb. She had already begun her next volley when the warrior declared the card and she realized her mistake. Two spellcards active at once? Well… There wasn't really anything against it in the rules, but it was still more than a little unusual. Her own spell was nearly up and she was in a poor position to dodge. She had to commend the wolf's cleverness. She certainly wouldn't have the courage to activate a card while her opponent's was still active. The danmaku appeared above and below as she finished her volley, the maid pausing for a fraction to assess the situation just as the walls began to close at amazing speed. Her spell broke as the jaws snapped shut, having lost far too much concentration as she barely wove between the bullets, leaving her dress and sleeves badly scorched and immediately putting her on the defensive.

Attempting to dodge a spellcard like this with conventional means was out of the question. The bullets were simply too dense and required an amazing amount of speed to dodge. If all of Momiji's cards were like this it would wear her down too quickly. She would lose. It couldn't be helped. A fight in the trees was inevitable.

The maid shot downward with as much speed as she dared. The second wall that formed was thicker than the first, the pattern unchanged from before. And the woman was ready this time. Weaving through the ones below, she spun in place, carefully moving through the ones that were dropping from above. She thought she would almost make it to the tree line when the next wave appeared, too close to avoid. Spitting a curse that was lost to the wind, the maid drew her only bomb, a shock of power rippling from her body, obliterating the wave of bullets and snapping some of the nearby trees in half, the maid landed lightly on a fallen branch, dashing off into the wood.

Scarcely a breath had passed as knives began whistling upward from the forest, grazing past the tengu only to plummet back down again toward the tengu and the ground far below. No two blades shot from the same location, drawing the path of movement the maid took. It was erratic with little rhyme or reason, making the woman difficult to predict, though it seemed that the human was at least attempting to remain in the thicker patches of trees where her smaller blades would have the greatest advantage.

Momiji felt a wave of relief as her opponent's spellcard faded out, and managed to slip through the remaining blades with relative ease. Concentrating on the maid's position, she fired another wave of Danmaku, disappointed that she had only managed to graze her opponent. Unsurprised at the absolute miss after her rather unsuccessful first wave, the guardswoman followed up much more quickly. Though she was glad that she had managed to force her opponent to use a bomb, Momiji had been hoping for a direct hit. Further, as Sakuya escaped into the forest below, the white wolf tengu felt frustrated that the maid had slipped away once more.

As the onslaught of knives began to pick back up, Momiji dropped back down, allowing herself to more or less go into free-fall, save for thrust used to move horizontally, making her movements somewhat harder to predict. She did, however, have to slow down before she hit the tops of the trees to avoid crashing. Quickly scrambling down through the branches, the guardswoman could hear knives cutting through the leaves around her on their way back down. As soon as she made it down and landed, she was back in motion. Unwilling to fully stick to the air or the ground, Momiji pursued her foe with a series of low leaps, supplemented by her flight abilities, weaving through the trees to avoid giving her opponent a direct shot. Knowing that her danmaku would be all but useless with these trees, the white wolf had to get close enough to make use of her sword. While normally she would not expect difficulty in catching an opponent, the trees, her injury, and the maid's teleportation would make this a challenge, one on which Momiji's chances of winning rested.

Postby Sakuya Izayoi » 08 Jun 2013 09:43

Though Sakuya was accustomed to fighting in the tight quarters of the mansion's hallways, she was not not as experienced at moving through the dense foliage as Momiji. The branches would whip at her arms, face, and clothes, tearing them some and slowing her down greatly. Even if she could get an edge in an environment like this, Momiji would simply be able to go on the defensive and wear her down that way. She needed enough pressure to force Momiji to surrender or beat her down quickly… It couldn't be helped.

The maid rushed back through some lighter areas of trees, dodging, weaving around them, scattering knives as she moved, cutting tree branches to slow the tengu down. She vanished, moving quite a distance forward into a semi clearing. She had to end this as quickly as she could. This spell would take a lot out of her.

Time Sign: 'Mirror Paradox'

If there was any ambiguity about the nature of the maid's powers, it was gone now. The faint sense of void Momiji had experienced around her had amplified many times, leaving a faint ache in her joints and teeth. The world around the maid seemed to distort and undulate. Whatever she was doing, it was a massive tap on her power, though no danmaku manifested. The maid could only hope that such a flashy display would put Momiji on the defensive.

As quickly as it began, it ended, though the maid's battle aura had grown considerably. She took a single breath and charged Momiji eyes a blaze of red as she cut through the brush and low branches with amazing haste. Her speed had been boosted somewhat. She didn't deviate much from her straight path, the tactic unlike any of the evasive movements she had used before.

Sakuya's knives glinted brightly as she drew them, the human leaping into the air. And then- a second figure dark haired and similarly dressed appeared hidden by the maid's direct path. A twin. A paradox. The darker maid was smiling, knives similarly drawn. Waves from both fronts struck, rapid blades expertly aimed raining down upon the tengu with great force.

Momiji continued to chase after her opponent, slowly gaining on the maid. While she was not able to move at full speed, she was able to avoid being slowed as much as Sakuya was, due to her larger weapon allowing her to cut straight through any obstructing branches. If the guardswoman could keep this up without getting struck by any of her opponent’s knives, she would be able to catch up to her opponent and finish this. Momiji could feel the thrill of the hunt begin to seize her, and only by reminding herself that, until now, she had been losing quite badly was the white wolf able to avoid being overwhelmed by her instincts.

As soon as Sakuya activate her spellcard, Momiji ceased her approach and took to the air, slowly retreating without taking her eyes off the maid. It was suddenly becoming clear what her opponent’s true powers were. Not teleportation, but manipulation of time. And whatever Sakuya was doing, it was clearly of great magnitude. Momiji landed once more and stood her ground, shield raised, as her opponent charged, as the guardswoman was more than happy to have a chance to engage the maid in close quarters combat. Then, suddenly, the tengu found herself under attack by both her opponent and a duplicate. She had to take to the air again in order to dodge the storm of blades coming at her, and she backed away as fast as she felt safe doing.

While Momiji was able to deflect most of her opponents’ knives with her sword and shield, some still managed to leave her with shallow cuts as they grazed her flesh. One, however, nearly struck the guardswoman square in the forehead – while she managed to shift her head out of the way, it still grazed above her left eye, causing blood to drip down her face. Momiji knew that, if she wanted to defeat the maid, she would have to go on the offensive, and strike hard. However, she would need to get enough room to utilize a spellcard if she wanted to hit hard enough, but that would require her to turn her back on her opponent. “I suppose I don’t have any other choice,” the tengu said quietly, “Nothing to lose…” As quickly as she could, Momiji turned around and forced herself to fly away from the two Sakuyas at top speed. Slowing down after several dozen meters in order to stop, she felt two knives land in her back, one on the right, just below her spine, the other much lower on the left. Turning to face her opponents once again, the white wolf prepared another spellcard, one far more powerful than her last – and also far more risky to use.

Spirit Sword “Heavenly Dog’s Fang”

The swordswoman’s weapon began to glow a bright blue, seemingly indicating a charging danmaku barrage. Then she did something that would likely catch the maid off guard – Momiji rushed her opponent. Shield raised and sword drawn back to strike, she forged her way through the barrage of knives at top speed. Though the guardswoman felt several knives sink into her limbs and into the outer areas of her torso, staining her clothes red with blood. As she neared her opponent, she knew she was on the edge of passing out. Whatever the outcome, Momiji knew she wouldn’t last past this attack – she had to make it count. If it hit, the massive discharge of energy into the maid’s body would hopefully be enough to knock out her opponent. Fangs barred, eyes ablaze, the guardswoman closed in on what was, as far as she could tell, the original Sakuya and thrust her magic-imbued sword forward, even as she began to feel her consciousness fading.

Sakuya and her dopple danced around Momiji, blades flashing with each strike. They were both equally adept, their fighting styles nearly identical, though there was a small degree of variation, it was too slight to take advantage of without study, and the tengu clearly didn't have time to do that.

Though the maid was beating the soldier back hard, she was still cautious, attempting to keep at least some distance between the two, directing her paradox with small gestures, the time-copy giving her original the occasional instruction as well, and when Momiji declared a card, both gave mirrored signals, jumping back some ways, the knives never relenting.

It wasn't as large of a surprise as Momiji might have thought. The wolf tengu obviously specialized in close combat, so the rush wasn't a surprise. What did catch her off, guard, was the speed and ferocity. she would not be able to simply outrun the soldier. Both Sakuya and her dopple backpedaled as quickly as possible, dancing around trees, throwing knives when they could… They leaped away from each other, forcing Momiji to choose just one of them.

Momiji's strike lit up the forest, the energy arcing through the trees and across the ground. It wasn't a direct hit, but the shock of the energy hit the human hard, sending her flying backward into a large tree, slowly sliding down the trunk, holding her arm tightly, the wind knocked out of her.

The darker Sakuya emerged from nearby, bowing once deeply to her original before she dissolved into a faint crackle of energy, waves of a void-like sensation washing over the area. Battered and bloody, she stared out into the darkness, waiting for Momiji to emerge.

Momiji grinned briefly as her attack connected, before she lost control, kept conscious only by the searing pain of the multiple knives stuck in her. The energy dissipated from her sword, and the guardswoman tumbled from the air, narrowly managing to rotate her body to avoid landing on any of the knives. Landing a ways behind Sakuya, Momiji let her eyes fall shut for a few seconds.

Forcing her eyes open once more, she saw one of her opponents fade away and, after a moment, noticed where her other opponent was. Half crawling, half dragging herself along the ground, the white wolf tengu moved slowly towards the maid. After a minute, Momiji was able to prop herself up against a nearby tree, close enough that she could speak to Sakuya. “You fought well,” the guardswoman coughed. As she spoke, she could taste the blood that was running down her face. Looking down, she saw that the rest of her body was similarly covered in her own blood, though it seemed her opponent was not doing much better.

After a pause to catch her breath, Momiji continued, “It’s not often I have the pleasure of such a fight… Thank you…” Using the tree to drag herself to her feet, the guardswoman took a shaky step to leave, before remembering that her opponent lacked the fortitude of a youkai, and that her wounds had been rather severe. Looking over her shoulder, Momiji asked, “Sakuya… Will you be able to make it out of here on your own? I won’t leave you to die.” Though her voice was shaking from the pain she was in, there was steel in her voice, far more so than normal.

The maid picked her head up as she heard Momiji approach, her silver hair streaked with crimson, but she was smiling all the same, having regained her breath somewhat. "You too. It's rare that I get the pleasure of fighting another blade user, but I believe this to be a draw unfortunately. Mistress will not be overly enthused."

Sakuya managed to rise as momiji did, her uniform torn in several places. Her right leg looked to be in poor shape, skirt torn vertically, a gash extending from her hip to her knee. The maid stared at it for a moment, swallowing her pride. "I would not object to an escort. We can treat our wounds in the safety of the mansion and you can remove those knives in a place that can treat you for any bleeding. This will also save me a trip to the mountain as I will not have to retrieve my weapons from you."

Leaning heavily on the tree, Sakuya drew another knife, cutting a strip from the bottom of her skirt, and wrapping the part of the gash that appeared the deepest. "I will go to Eientei in the morning." Shakily, she stood on her own, ensuring she had balance before rising into the air. "Let us be off Perhaps A cup of tea is in order later on."

Momiji smiled as her former opponent rose to her feet, glad that she had not injured the maid as bad as she had feared. “I suppose that would be a shorter trip,” the guardswoman replied to Sakuya’s suggestion, “Even if I was with you I don’t think the tengu would care to have an outsider among them, anyway. I shall follow after you.”

Pausing for a moment, Momiji closed her eyes and took a few deep breaths. Slowly at first, she ascended once more into the air. Her voice slipping into something of a growl from exhaustion, the guardswoman said to Sakuya, “I guess we nearly got out of control there. I miss such deadly combat. I get a rush from it that the spellcard rules take away. But, then, perhaps I’m just old-fashioned.” Shaking her head, the swordswoman smiled again, glad to have found such an exceptional opponent. "Let's go," Momiji said, taking off alongside Sakuya.
